2024 Volkswagen Tiguan: styling

Most will recognise the new Tiguan as a Volkswagen fairly quickly, with some obvious hints of the latest Golf about the shape of the LED headlights. As an optional extra, these lights can be had with the same ‘IQ Light HD’ matrix technology found on the latest Touareg. In the case of the Tigaun these lights illuminate the road ahead, plus the surrounding area, with no fewer than 38,400 individually controllable LEDs, all without dazzling oncoming drivers.

Between the headlights sits a glass-covered horizontal bar where you’d usually expect to find the front grille, which can be specified optionally with an LED lighting strip for some extra visual impact. Instead of a regular grille, the Tiguan’s front air intakes are built into the lower part of the bumper, and the openings flare out towards the sides of the car, adding visual width.

Down the sides of the car are alloy wheels measuring up to 20 inches in size. Move to the rear, and you’ll find a rear spoiler that has side foils to guide air neatly around the rear window, and the darkened tail light units run the width of the car. Where the high-grade lighting package is specified, there's a further LED light strip here to complement the one at the front.

2024 Volkswagen Tiguan: interior design and practicality

Size-wise, the new Tiguan is only slightly longer (30mm) than the car it replaces, and slightly taller (4mm) as well, while the width and wheelbase remain unchanged. Volkswagen claims that there’s marginally more headroom front (9mm) and back (10mm) than in the outgoing car, but otherwise, we reckon you can expect very similar passenger space to the current car, which is to say that there’s plenty.

Boot space has increased to 652 litres when loaded to the height of the rear-seat backrests, up 37 litres on the outgoing Tiguan. The rear seats leave a flat and level load area when they’re folded, but it remains to be seen whether the current car’s sliding rear seats will be retained.

Up front, the cabin looks to have plenty of colourful surfaces and ambient mood lighting, but it’s the screens that dominate. The one directly in front of the driver is a 10.25-inch information display, while the central touchscreen measures either 12.9 inches or 15.0 inches, depending on spec and options.

The central infotainment uses a new interface and menu structure, which Volkswagen claims is ‘intuitive and easy to operate’. Anyone with experience of VW’s other recent efforts in the infotainment arena will certainly hope so, because its systems have lagged behind rivals with glitch-prone software and lack of backlighting for the heating controls.

The Tiguan can also be specified with ergoActive seats. These have 14-way electric adjustment, heating and cooling, plus a 10-chamber pneumatic massage function

2024 Volkswagen Tiguan: hybrid, engines and drive

Unsurprisingly, the new Tiguan is based on VW's MQB evo platform, which also underpins the latest Golf Mk8, as well as the latest versions of the Audi A3, Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia. It’ll be offered with a range of turbocharged engines, including 2.0-litre petrols with 201bhp and 261bhp, and 2.0-litre diesels with 148bhp and 190bhp.

There will also be eTSI versions which have 1.5-litre turbo petrol engines - giving either 129bhp or 148bhp - with 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

The biggest news, however, is that two new plug-in hybrid versions of the Tiguan will be launched. Badged as eHybrid, these combine a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor and an 18.5kWh lithium-ion battery, to deliver either 201bhp or 268bhp. VW forecasts that these versions will be able to travel up to 100km (62 miles) on electric-only power on a full charge.

All Tiguans will be offered with some form of DSG automatic gearbox, and while most versions will be front-wheel drive, the 2.0-litre petrol and the more powerful of the 2.0-litre diesels will have 4Motion four-wheel drive.

2024 Volkswagen Tiguan: price and release date

The new Tiguan is scheduled to reach dealerships in the first quarter of 2024, and exact pricing and specification information for the UK is yet to be announced. The German-sourced press information we’ve seen mentions four trim levels: Tiguan, Life, Elegance and R-Line, but whether those trims and their contents apply to the UK market remains to be seen.

If they do, the basic car will have standard kit including single-zone climate control, the 12.9-inch infotainment screen, roof rails, USB-C ports, 17-inch alloy wheels, reversing camera and active driver assistance systems including autonomous emergency braking, lane change assist and lane keeping assist. Life trim upgrades the climate control to a three-zone system, and also adds active cruise control, parking assistance, a variable boot floor and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. For many, that last item will be worth the upgrade on its own.

2024 VW Tiguan rear seats

Elegance cars get the additional lighting strips front and rear, rear privacy glass, extended ambient lighting, a powered tailgate, 18-inch alloys, a self-parking function and the ergoActive seats. R-Line cars get all that plus some sportier styling touches inside and out, plus standard 19-inch rims.
