Citroen e-C4 X Electric: styling and practicality
The Citroen e-C4 X Electric combines the sloping silhouette of a four-door coupe, but with the raised ride height and chunky wheel arches of an SUV. As a result, it looks sleek – sleeker than the e-C4 EV it shares parts with – but can rival an SUV for practicality.
Inside, the Citroen gets a 10-inch infotainment screen complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, although you still get physical knobs to adjust the ventilation system. You can expect to find plenty of room for four adults and the boot is large: at 510 litres, it is significantly bigger than the 385-litre boot you’ll find in the Volkswagen ID.3 and also has a space to store the car’s charging cables under the floor.
Citroen e-C4 X Electric: battery capacity, range, charging speeds and drive
The Citroen e-C4 X Electric will only be available with a 50kWh battery in tandem with a 100kW (134bhp) electric motor that spins the front wheels. It’s a combination that gives the Citroen a range of up to 222 miles, although you can expect significantly less in cold weather or at fast cruising speeds.
By comparison, a Volkswagen ID.3 EV offers a range of up to 265 miles. Charging the Citroen is relatively quick, however, with a 0-80 per cent charge taking as little as 30 minutes using a 100kW public rapid charger, or 7.5 hours using your wallbox charger at home.
Citroen doesn’t quote performance figures, although the mechanically identical e-C4 does 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds and tops out at 93mph. Comfort will be the e-C4 X’s main focus, however, and all models come equipped with Citroen’s Advanced Comfort suspension. which promises to deliver a squidgy ride, probably at the expense of excessive body lean in fast corners.
Citroen e-C4 X Electric: price, release date and specifications
The Citroen Citroen e-C4 X Electric is available to order now with prices starting from £31,995: impressive value when a basic Volkswagen ID.3 will set you back nearly £37,000.
That buys you a basic Sense model, which comes as standard with kit like 18-inch alloy wheels, thickly padded Advanced Comfort seats, keyless entry and start, and a 10-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You also get plenty of safety kit such as automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, lane-keep assist and attention assist, which warns you when you need to take a break from driving.
Shine models sit in the middle of the range and start from £34,495. Using Sense models as a base, they add kit like Citroen’s top-of-the-range Drive Plus infotainment system, which has built-in sat-nav and voice recognition. You also get a head-up display, auto-dipping headlights, reversing camera and a heated steering wheel. Shine models also get uprated automatic emergency brakes that detect cyclists and pedestrians as well as cars, and Extended Traffic Sign Recognition, which displays the current speed limit on the head-up display and can automatically set the car’s cruise control to match it.
Above Shine, you’ll find Shine Plus models, which add Highway Driver Assist, which means the e-C4 X can essentially drive itself on the motorway so long as you keep your hands on the steering wheel. Prices for the top-of-the-range model start from £35,495. We'll have a full review of the Citroen e-C4 X in the coming weeks.
