Car is a proper driving car, great handling and plenty space for a mid size SUV. Can’t think of any faults apart from a lack of dealership’s if something went wrong.

Its a very desirable car, but misses out on certain tech, such as HUD, Blind Spot alerts & also very confusing model variants. Im not sure if lack of touch screen on infotainment is good or not though. Personal choice, I guess.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exciting to drive, especially the Quadrifoglio | Cramped in the back |
| Good looks | Brittle ride |
| High quality cabin | Thirsty petrol engines |
Quick Summary
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) is a mid-sized SUV that successfully combines sporting credentials with practical family transport. Alfa Romeo has attempted to inject the brand's famous design flair and driving dynamics into the increasingly popular SUV segment, and largely succeeds. The exterior design is sleek and purposeful, whilst the interior features high-quality materials including aluminium and wood with tactile finishes. An 8.8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity comes as standard across the range, along with satellite navigation, DAB digital radio, and Bluetooth connectivity.
The Stelvio's handling is genuinely impressive for a high-riding SUV, with sharp steering and excellent grip, though the ride can feel brittle, particularly on larger wheels, making long-distance cruising less comfortable. Engine options include 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol units (197bhp or 276bhp) and 2.2-litre diesel engines (187bhp or 207bhp), with the range-topping Quadrifoglio featuring a 503bhp twin-turbocharged V6. Practicality is somewhat compromised by the sloping roofline, which limits rear headroom and legroom, though the 525-litre boot (expanding to 1,600 litres with seats folded) is adequate for family needs. Running costs are moderate to high, with petrol engines returning around 30mpg and diesels approximately 44mpg in official figures, though real-world consumption is typically lower.
Best for: Enthusiastic drivers seeking an engaging SUV with distinctive styling, those prioritising driving dynamics over practicality, and buyers interested in the high-performance Quadrifoglio variant.
Not ideal for: Families requiring spacious rear seating, those seeking a comfortable long-distance cruiser, budget-conscious buyers, or those concerned about fuel economy and running costs.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alfa Romeo Stelvio | 3/5 | 4.0/5 | 35.1% | 4.0/5 |
| BMW X3 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.4% | 4.5/5 |
| Land Rover Discovery Sport | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.1% | 4.5/5 |
| Audi Q5 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 32.9% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Stelvio if: You're an enthusiastic driver seeking an engaging SUV with distinctive Italian styling, prioritise driving dynamics over practicality, or are interested in the thrilling Quadrifoglio performance variant.
Consider alternatives if: You require spacious rear seating, seek a comfortable long-distance cruiser, are budget-conscious, or prioritise fuel economy and lower running costs.
Competitive Position: The Alfa Romeo Stelvio occupies a unique position in the mid-sized SUV market, offering genuine driving excitement and striking design that few rivals can match. Whilst the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Land Rover Discovery Sport all score higher in expert ratings and offer greater practicality and refinement, the Stelvio rewards enthusiastic drivers with sharper handling and more engaging dynamics. Its firm ride and cramped rear seating are trade-offs for its sporting character. For buyers willing to prioritise driving enjoyment over comfort and space, the Stelvio delivers distinctive Italian flair that competitors struggle to replicate, particularly in the form of the extraordinary Quadrifoglio.
