Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exciting to drive, especially the Quadrifoglio | Cramped in the back |
| Good looks | Brittle ride |
| High quality cabin | Thirsty petrol engines |
Quick Summary
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) is a mid-sized SUV that successfully combines sporting credentials with practical everyday usability. Alfa Romeo has transplanted the brand's renowned design flair and engaging driving dynamics into the UK's most popular vehicle category. The exterior features a sleek profile with sharp lines and purposeful stance, whilst the interior showcases high-quality materials including aluminium and wood with tactile finishes. An 8.8-inch infotainment screen provides smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though cabin quality falls slightly short of premium rivals like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.
The Stelvio's handling is impressively sharp for a high-riding SUV, with responsive steering and excellent grip, though the firm ride can feel brittle, particularly on larger wheels, making extended cruising less comfortable. Engine options include 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol variants (197bhp or 276bhp) and 2.2-litre diesels (187bhp or 207bhp), with the range-topping Quadrifoglio featuring a 503bhp twin-turbocharged V6 for serious enthusiasts. Boot capacity of 525 litres (1,600 litres with seats folded) suits family needs, though rear headroom and legroom are limited by the sloping roofline. Running costs are moderate, with diesels achieving around 44mpg officially and petrol engines around 30mpg, though real-world figures are typically lower.
Best for: Enthusiastic drivers seeking an SUV with engaging dynamics and Italian style, those prioritising design and driving enjoyment over practicality, and performance-focused buyers considering the Quadrifoglio variant.
Not ideal for: Families needing spacious rear accommodation, buyers seeking the most economical SUV option, those prioritising ride comfort on longer journeys, or drivers concerned about brand reliability reputation.

The Verdict
You should buy the Stelvio if: You're an enthusiastic driver seeking an SUV with engaging dynamics and Italian style, prioritise design and driving enjoyment, or are interested in the thrilling Quadrifoglio performance variant.
Consider alternatives if: You need spacious rear accommodation, seek the most economical SUV option, prioritise ride comfort on longer journeys, or have concerns about brand reliability reputation.
Competitive Position: The Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) occupies a unique position in the mid-sized SUV market, offering distinctive Italian design and engaging driving dynamics that few rivals can match. Whilst the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 provide superior overall refinement and the Land Rover Discovery Sport offers greater practicality and user satisfaction, the Stelvio rewards enthusiastic drivers with a more involving experience. Its firm ride and cramped rear seating are trade-offs for sportiness, making it ideal for those prioritising driving enjoyment over comfort and space. The Quadrifoglio variant stands alone as an affordable performance SUV alternative to the Porsche Macan.

4 Overall rating
(2 reviews)Car is a proper driving car, great handling and plenty space for a mid size SUV. Can’t think of any faults apart from a lack of dealership’s if something went wrong.
Its a very desirable car, but misses out on certain tech, such as HUD, Blind Spot alerts & also very confusing model variants. Im not sure if lack of touch screen on infotainment is good or not though. Personal choice, I guess.
