Audi A5 (2024-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Tech-focused interior | Not as sharp to drive as a BMW 3 Series |
| Wide range of powertrains including diesel | Digital displays might prove overwhelming |
| Covers long distances with ease | Too many functions rely on touchscreen |
Quick Summary
The Audi A5 (2024-present) is a premium family car that takes over the role of the previous A4, offering a practical hatchback configuration rather than a traditional saloon. Available with petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, the A5 delivers an impressive blend of performance and efficiency. The diesel variant, equipped with the MHEV Plus mild hybrid system, achieves close to 50mpg in real-world driving and offers a 615-mile range per tank. The cabin is dominated by high-quality screens and technology, providing an exceptionally modern driving environment with excellent refinement and comfort for long-distance journeys.
The A5's practicality is genuinely impressive, with a 445-litre boot (417 litres with quattro all-wheel drive) and a wide-opening hatchback tailgate that makes loading easier than traditional saloon rivals. Rear passenger space is generous, with good headroom and legroom for most occupants. Whilst the extensive use of touchscreen controls may frustrate some drivers, the fundamentals of a premium car—quality, comfort, and capability—are all present and correct. Entry-level models start around £45,000, with strong residual values helping offset the initial purchase price, though owners should note the expensive car supplement of VED for years two to six of ownership.
Best for: Buyers seeking a premium family car with excellent refinement, smart technology, and practical hatchback versatility; high-mileage drivers who value diesel efficiency and long-range capability; those who appreciate cutting-edge infotainment systems.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising sharp, engaging handling (like a BMW 3 Series); those who prefer traditional physical controls over touchscreen interfaces; buyers uncomfortable with Audi's confusing naming strategy or concerned about screen overload in the cabin.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict
You should buy the A5 if: You're seeking a premium family car with excellent refinement, smart technology, and practical hatchback versatility; you're a high-mileage driver who values diesel efficiency and long-range capability; or you appreciate cutting-edge infotainment systems.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sharp, engaging handling, prefer traditional physical controls over touchscreen interfaces, or are uncomfortable with Audi's confusing naming strategy.
Competitive Position: The Audi A5 (2024-present) is a strong contender in the premium family car segment, offering excellent refinement, practical hatchback versatility, and impressive efficiency. Whilst the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series edge ahead in terms of expert ratings and overall CarGurus scores, the A5 holds its own with the highest user rating (4.7/5) and competitive value proposition. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class matches the A5's overall rating, but the A5's hatchback configuration and diesel efficiency give it a distinct practical advantage. For buyers prioritising technology, long-distance comfort, and practicality over sharp handling, the A5 represents a compelling choice in this competitive segment.

(34 reviews)Happy with the car and very helpful nice owner! Highly recommend
Car is good value for money and well finished off
Perfect model with ideal specs (any model or trim) for our needs. Also fantastic build quality and if any repairs required not as expensive as you would think!
2009 A5 S-Line 3.0TDI Quattro Absolute beast of a car. Handles incredibly well for its size and has no issues with getting you to the speed limit in very little time. Huge boot which is only held back by the small tailgate on the Coupe. Averages around 40mpg on motorway runs and around 34mpg on short journeys but the smiles you get from it on the way make up for that. A serious car for serious torque lovers, would definitely recommend.
Quality Audi vehicle. Stylish practical 5 door coupe that in quattro form has stunning capability and very safe road holding.
