Audi S3 (2006-2012) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very quick, with the all-weather security of four-wheel drive | Not as exciting as a Ford Focus ST |
| Comfortable and capable on a long journey | Iffy reliability could lead to a big bill |
| Subtle good looks | Small boot means packing light |
Quick Summary
The Audi S3 (2006-2012), known as the S3 8P, is an understated hot hatch that doesn't overtly advertise its performance like some rivals. Launched in 2006, it offers prodigious grip, well-balanced handling, and rapid acceleration, reaching 60mph in just 5.6 seconds thanks to its 265hp turbocharged engine. While some find it less engaging than competitors, it provides a mature and extremely fast driving experience, especially with its consistent torque delivery from 2,500rpm to 5,000rpm.
The S3's cabin boasts typical Audi quality with stylish design and solid build. Practicality includes comfortable seating for four, though the boot is relatively small (281-302 litres). Running costs, while not outrageous for servicing, require attention to specific maintenance items like cambelt changes, S tronic gearbox fluid, and Haldex unit oil, which can lead to significant bills if neglected. Fuel economy averages around 26mpg. Despite potential reliability issues, a well-maintained S3 offers a satisfying ownership experience, blending meaty performance with a classy interior and premium, low-key looks.
Best for: Drivers seeking discreet performance, those who value Audi's build quality and refined interior, buyers looking for a mature and comfortable hot hatch capable of long journeys, and those who appreciate the all-weather security of quattro four-wheel drive.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising a more raw or thrilling driving experience (like a Ford Focus ST), those needing a large boot for luggage, or individuals wary of potentially high maintenance costs for specific components.

The Verdict
You should buy the S3 if: You're seeking discreet performance, value Audi's build quality and refined interior, desire a mature and comfortable hot hatch for long journeys, or appreciate the all-weather security of quattro four-wheel drive.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise a more raw or thrilling driving experience, need a large boot for luggage, or are wary of potentially high maintenance costs for specific components.
Competitive Position: The Audi S3 (2006-2012) stands out in the hot hatch market by offering impressive speed and composure with an understated, premium appeal. While it may not deliver the raw excitement of some rivals, its robust performance from the turbocharged engine, combined with the security of quattro four-wheel drive and a high-quality cabin, makes it a compelling choice. Buyers should be mindful of specific maintenance requirements to avoid large bills, but a well-cared-for S3 provides a satisfying blend of performance, luxury, and practicality, particularly for those who appreciate a more mature driving experience.

4.7 Overall rating
(16 reviews)The car was even better than I had thought , clean inside and out . Definitely well priced aswell
Great car, good power when you need it but also decent comfort would say it’s a great all rounder.
The car was nice, and lacked nothing other than 19” low profile tyres to make the look and ride of the vehicle more appealing.
Lovely car , vastly overpriced. Would only consider if price was reduced substantially.
Great features and great value for money, I don’t think it’s missing anything that I require.
