Audi TT Coupe (1999-2005) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| A style icon that still looks good today | Lacks the thrill factor of a Porsche Boxster |
| Strong performance and soundtrack from 3.2-litre V6 | Tired examples can cost a lot to maintain |
| Sensible servicing costs if you use an independent specialist | 1.8-litre turbo engine sounds bland |
Quick Summary
The Audi TT Coupe (1999-2005), internally dubbed the Type 8N, is an increasingly sought-after sports coupe combining decent performance and attention-grabbing design with everyday practicality. Unveiled in 1998 and arriving on the UK market shortly after, it marked Audi's return to the sports car sector. The TT faced off against the Porsche Boxster, BMW Z3, and Mercedes-Benz SLK, with later rivals including the Nissan 350Z and Mazda RX-8. The coupe features a spacious 305-litre boot and roomy front seats, though rear seats are cramped and better considered as luggage storage. The interior design is as attractive as the exterior, with stylish touches and sumptuous-feeling materials.
An array of variants were offered, including the TT 180 and TT 225, featuring 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engines producing 178bhp and 222bhp respectively. Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system was standard on many variants, providing an edge in poor conditions. The TT 225 accelerated from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds. Early cars were responsive and rewarding, but a recall-induced modification numbed driver appeal, resulting in a less exciting experience than rivals. A muscular 3.2-litre V6 option resolved aural issues but gave the car a cruiser-like nature. Running costs are reasonable, with the TT 225 averaging 30.1mpg combined. VED varies significantly by model year and transmission, ranging from £270 to £565 annually. Many examples have finished depreciating, with some appreciating in value. Servicing costs are sensible when using independent specialists, though tired examples can become expensive money pits.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, practical sports coupe with strong performance, those appreciating design and everyday usability, and enthusiasts willing to invest in proper maintenance.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising the thrill factor of a Porsche Boxster, the driving engagement of an MX-5, or the raw power of a Nissan 350Z, or buyers seeking a low-maintenance classic.

The Verdict
You should buy the TT if: You're seeking a stylish, practical sports coupe with strong performance, appreciate design and everyday usability, or are an enthusiast willing to invest in proper maintenance.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the thrill factor of a Porsche Boxster, the driving engagement of an MX-5, the raw power of a Nissan 350Z, or require a low-maintenance classic.
Competitive Position: The Audi TT Coupe (1999-2005) is a compelling proposition in the classic sports car market, offering striking design, practicality, and reasonable running costs. Whilst it lacks the visceral thrills of a Nissan 350Z, the cornering finesse of a Porsche Boxster, or the driving fun of a Mazda MX-5, the TT compensates with style, everyday usability, and a spacious interior. The V6 variant delivers strong performance and a sonorous soundtrack. Many examples have finished depreciating, and some are appreciating in value. Buy the best example you can afford, service it properly, and enjoy a beautiful piece of automotive design that remains engaging to drive and delightful to live with.

The Audi TT Coupe is celebrated for its sporty handling and exciting driving experience, earning praise from owners for its impressive power and quick acceleration. Many appreciate its stylish design and fun performance, but some drivers mention concerns regarding maintenance costs and the car's limited rear seat space. Overall, the TT Coupe is seen as a well-built vehicle that offers great enjoyment on the road, but some feel it could be more technologically advanced for its price.

What people say
what can i say great cheap car with lots of maintence costs esp if you want to make it look different or your a petrol head my automatic gearbox is great lots of power for a 08 and very quick off the mark to 60 mph overall lovely cars audi tfsi 2.0 in white auto red leather mmm
Excellent fun car to drive, reliable if maintained regularly and looked after. Well built car, mines the 2.0lt TFSI model petrol engine and have found the car very good on economy but it can differ depending on the way you drive it. Lovely performance and a fast car. I prefer the automatic DSG gearbox, with the additional paddle change on the steering wheel. Would recommend this model. There is also a surprising amount of boot space for a small sports car. The only criticism is the rear seats are completely pointless due to zero legroom, so the car really is a two seater like the soft top roadster version
Only had it for a month but its fun to drive and looks great. Still learning all the on board features Main criticism is the display in the middle of the steering wheel which is very distracting and non user friendly with regard to preset features. The visual display and preset buttons on my VW scirrocco was better.
excellent and very good value too im still searching for something very special an Audi TT or a V?W Beetle around 6 yrs old model.
Features of TT fair, handles superb fun to drive, after having various coupes, bmw,Mercedes Mazda,to me it would TT + BMW
