BMW 8 Series (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Quick and handles well | Not as exciting as a Porsche 911 |
| xDrive 4x4 models perform in all weathers | Not as luxurious as a Mercedes S-Class Coupe |
| Choice of convertible, coupe and four-door body styles | Coupe and convertible are cramped in the back |
Quick Summary
The BMW 8 Series (2018-present) is a striking grand tourer that straddles the middle ground between the overtly sporting Porsche 911 and the sumptuous Mercedes S-Class Coupe. This flagship performance model revives a name first introduced in 1990 and offers a choice of convertible, coupe and four-door Gran Coupe body styles. The regular coupe provides 420 litres of boot space, whilst the Gran Coupe delivers a more practical 440 litres. In M8 Competition guise, the 8 Series offers BMW's fastest and most powerful road car ever produced, with truly breathtaking acceleration and lusty performance across the range.
The 8 Series is far too big and heavy to be a true sports car, instead functioning as a refined grand tourer with a sharper edge in M8 variants. Fuel economy varies dramatically across the line-up, from around 40mpg in the 840d diesel to just 22mpg in the M8 Competition. All variants incur £475 annual road tax, though petrol models face a substantial £1,850 first-year rate. Insurance costs are significant, with even the least powerful model sitting in group 44 of 50. Servicing is available on fixed-price plans at £30 monthly for non-M models and £45 for the M8 Competition.
Best for: Buyers seeking a sophisticated grand tourer combining performance with refinement, those wanting a choice of body styles, and drivers in all-weather conditions (xDrive models).
Not ideal for: Those prioritising raw thrills like a 911, ultimate luxury like an S-Class Coupe, or those needing spacious rear seats in coupe and convertible variants.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW 8 Series | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 36.6% | 4.2/5 |
| Porsche 911 | 5/5 | 4.6/5 | 26.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 32.0% | 4.5/5 |
| Aston Martin Vantage | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 32.8% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the 8 Series if: You seek a sophisticated grand tourer combining performance with refinement, want a choice of body styles, or need all-weather capability with xDrive models.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise raw thrills like a 911, ultimate luxury like an S-Class Coupe, or require spacious rear seats in coupe and convertible variants.
Competitive Position: The BMW 8 Series occupies a compelling middle ground in the premium grand tourer segment. Whilst the Porsche 911 offers greater excitement and the Mercedes S-Class Coupe delivers superior luxury, the 8 Series provides an attractive balance of performance, refinement and versatility. Its multiple body style options and xDrive all-weather capability give it practical advantages over its rivals. However, it ultimately excels in no single area, making it the choice for those seeking a well-rounded grand tourer rather than a specialist machine. The M8 Competition variant delivers genuinely thrilling performance for those willing to embrace higher running costs.

4.7 Overall rating
(3 reviews)The car was what i was looking for Except for the red interior
the car is very highly specified and well finished. Pricewise it holds with other brands in the market. It is not for everyone as it could seem too imposing.
Very stylish four door family saloon with good acceleration and low fuel consumption .
