BMW X1 (2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Beautifully appointed interior | Ride slightly firmer than some rivals |
| Brilliant on space and practicality | Higher-end models are expensive |
| Pleasant to drive | Too much desirable kit costs extra |
Quick Summary
The BMW X1 is the third-generation entry-level SUV in BMW's lineup, offering a sophisticated blend of practicality, technology and driving enjoyment. At 4.5 metres long, it's larger than ever before, providing impressive interior space with a 540-litre boot and comfortable seating for five. The range includes mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrids with up to 56 miles of electric range, and a sporty M35i variant. All models feature an automatic transmission and come with modern technology including BMW's latest Operating System 9 with a responsive touchscreen infotainment system.
The X1 excels in practicality with rear seats that slide, recline and fold in a 40/20/40 split, making it ideal for families. The interior is one of the classiest in its class, with high-quality materials and thoughtful design. Driving dynamics are engaging with good handling and a sporty edge, though the suspension can feel slightly firm at low speeds compared to some rivals. The plug-in hybrid models are particularly desirable, offering excellent efficiency and genuine electric-only capability. Running costs are competitive, with servicing around £900–£1,000 for three years and insurance groups ranging from 24 to 35.
Best for: Families seeking a premium, spacious SUV with excellent practicality, those wanting plug-in hybrid efficiency, and drivers who value a refined, well-appointed interior and engaging driving experience.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising the softest, most cushioned ride, those seeking the lowest possible purchase price, or those unwilling to pay extra for desirable features like heated seats and keyless entry.

The Verdict
You should buy the X1 if: You're seeking a premium, spacious SUV with excellent practicality, want plug-in hybrid efficiency, or value a refined, well-appointed interior and engaging driving experience.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the softest ride, seek the lowest purchase price, or prefer not to pay extra for desirable features like heated seats and keyless entry.
Competitive Position: The BMW X1 is one of the strongest all-rounders in the compact premium SUV class. It combines a beautifully appointed interior, impressive practicality and pleasant driving dynamics with a broad range of powertrains to suit different needs. Whilst the Volvo XC40 edges ahead on user ratings and the Mercedes GLA and Audi Q3 offer slightly better value, the X1's superior interior quality, generous boot space and sophisticated plug-in hybrid options make it a compelling choice for those willing to invest in premium comfort and technology. It's an excellent family SUV that delivers on both practicality and driving enjoyment.

4.5 Overall rating
(6 reviews)Excellent condition, smooth drive , looks smart in my driveway, good value
Replaced a 2013 X3 and this motor is more maneuverable and nippy, but does not have the same presence on the road. We have reduced from two cars and my wife is happy with this too. I think a qualified positive, but we shall see.
Good size (not too big) and great to drive. Well-equipped car.
A very great small suv. fantastic car, cant fault it .
Some good features included but missing heated seats, reversing camera, front sensors just to name but a few.
