BMW X2 (2017-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent iDrive infotainment system | Brittle and uncompromising ride |
| Low benefit-in-kind tax if you run the plug-in hybrid as a company car | The X1 is roomier and more practical |
| Sensible running costs | Odd looks |
Quick Summary
The BMW X2 (2017-2023) is an unconventional compact SUV that blurs the line between crossover and hatchback. Rather than offering the commanding driving position typical of SUVs, the X2 sits low with a seating position barely different from a standard hatchback. It provides a 470-litre boot and comes with a range of petrol and diesel engines, plus a plug-in hybrid option. The iDrive infotainment system is class-leading, featuring intuitive touchscreen and rotary controller operation, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Running costs are sensible, particularly with diesel variants achieving 40-45mpg in real-world driving, whilst BMW's strong residual values help offset premium ownership costs.
However, the X2's odd positioning comes with compromises. The ride is firm and uncompromising across all variants, worsened by larger wheels or M Sport suspension. Rear seat access is limited due to small door openings, making it unsuitable for families with young children, whilst headroom is tight. The X1 offers superior practicality and space, making it a more convincing choice for those prioritising utility. The X2's styling, whilst distinctive, leans heavily towards hatchback aesthetics rather than traditional SUV design, leaving its purpose somewhat unclear in a crowded market.
Best for: Premium brand enthusiasts, company car drivers (especially plug-in hybrid users), and those prioritising infotainment technology and sensible running costs over practicality.
Not ideal for: Families with young children, buyers seeking a comfortable ride, those wanting traditional SUV space and commanding driving position, or those prioritising value over badge prestige.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X2 | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 31.9% | 4.2/5 |
| Audi Q3 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 35.8% | 4.3/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 36.3% | 4.4/5 |
| Volvo XC40 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.3% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the X2 if: You prioritise premium infotainment technology, sensible running costs, and badge prestige, or you're a company car driver seeking low benefit-in-kind tax on the plug-in hybrid variant.
Consider alternatives if: You need a family-friendly compact SUV with spacious rear seats, prioritise ride comfort, want a traditional SUV driving position, or seek better value for money.
Competitive Position: The BMW X2 occupies an unusual niche in the compact SUV market, offering premium technology and sensible running costs but compromising on practicality and ride quality. Whilst its iDrive system is class-leading and residual values remain strong, rivals like the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, and Volvo XC40 offer superior expert ratings and user satisfaction. The X2's unconventional positioning—neither fully SUV nor hatchback—makes it a compelling choice only for those valuing premium brand appeal and infotainment over traditional SUV virtues. For most buyers, the more conventional alternatives provide better all-round capability and comfort.

5 Overall rating
(3 reviews)Excellent - Sporty crossover - Very good on fuel and the auto gearbox a job. Well equipped and bags of room.
Very pleased with the car, having a 4 series I was skeptical about going for a smaller SUV type vehicle, but a very pleasant surprise, car feels and drives impeccably, you feel secure within as very well built and sturdy. Engine is equally as good as the last 4 series I just sold, went for Petrol this time, not had one of them for many years, it drives like a dream, quiet and very responsive, inside for a smaller SUV it is still spacious, and a good hatch / boot area.
See my earlier comments. X2 has lots of brilliant features in the high spec.versions, very well built from quality materials, excellent panel gaps.......made to last!! Unfortunately, the high spec. versions are TOO EXPENSIVE..There are other brands that will give you very high spec. for a lot less money, but they dont have the same cachet as BMs.
