BMW X5 (2023-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Far more enjoyable to drive than most large SUVs | Not as capable off road as a Land Rover Discovery |
| Brilliant plug-in hybrid version | Petrols in particular are expensive to run |
| Staggering performance of X5 M | Not everyone will take to the styling |
Quick Summary
The BMW X5 is the fourth-generation luxury SUV, introduced in 2018 and facelifted in 2023. It offers an impressive blend of performance, style, space and practicality, with a wide choice of engines including an efficient plug-in hybrid xDrive50e, two diesel options and two high-performance V8-powered M models. The X5 feels impressively car-like to drive, with tidy body control and the reassurance of standard four-wheel drive. It provides excellent passenger space with ample room for five adults, generous headroom and legroom, making it a comfortable long-distance cruiser. Boot capacity is strong at 650 litres in five-seat non-hybrid models, expanding to 1,870 litres with rear seats folded flat.
The plug-in hybrid xDrive50e is the most efficient option, emitting as little as 19g/km of CO2 and achieving a claimed 353mpg, making it ideal for company car drivers. Diesel versions deliver respectable efficiency, whilst the V8-powered M models offer supercar-baiting pace at the expense of high fuel and tax costs. Standard air suspension soaks up poor road surfaces, making long motorway journeys particularly relaxing. The X5 stands out as one of the most well-rounded large premium SUVs available, though it isn't cheap to run and the styling divides opinion.
Best for: Drivers seeking a spacious, luxurious and genuinely enjoyable large SUV for road-based driving, company car users (xDrive50e), and those wanting superb long-distance comfort and performance.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising off-road capability (Land Rover Discovery is better), those seeking the ultimate in luxury (Mercedes GLE), or drivers wanting the finest handling (Porsche Cayenne).
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X5 | 5/5 | 4.2/5 | 33.0% | 4.5/5 |
| Volvo XC90 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 29.8% | 4.4/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the X5 if: You're seeking a spacious, luxurious and genuinely enjoyable large SUV for road-based driving, a company car user wanting the efficient xDrive50e, or someone wanting superb long-distance comfort and performance.
Consider alternatives if: Off-road capability is a priority (Land Rover Discovery), you prioritise ultimate luxury (Mercedes GLE), or you want the finest handling dynamics (Porsche Cayenne).
Competitive Position: The BMW X5 gets the big stuff right: it's spacious, properly luxurious and, unlike most large SUVs, genuinely enjoyable to drive. It feels better behind the wheel than rivals such as the Volvo XC90 whilst remaining easy and refined in everyday use. The X5 isn't cheap to run, and the styling divides opinion, but it gets very little wrong. If you spend most of your time on the road, the X5 stands out as one of the most rounded and accomplished SUVs in its class, offering superior driving dynamics to the Volvo XC90 and a more refined experience than the Range Rover Sport.
