BMW Z4 (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More sporting than earlier Z4 generations, but still easy to live with | Not as engaging as a Porsche Boxster |
| Refined engines and a comfortable ride make long drives a pleasure | Relatively high running costs of M40i |
| Decent boot space for a sports car | No fixed-roof version (unless you count the Toyota Supra) |
Quick Summary
The BMW Z4 (2019-present) is a rear-wheel drive, two-seat roadster with a fabric hood that represents a significant step forward from its predecessor. Developed in partnership with Toyota, sharing its platform with the GR Supra, this latest generation features a shorter wheelbase and wider tracks that make it considerably more agile and responsive. The cabin boasts high-grade materials, good build quality, and an intuitive iDrive infotainment system, whilst the 281-litre boot provides decent storage for a two-seater sports car. With a low-slung driving position and purposeful design, the Z4 delivers a refined and comfortable driving experience suitable for everyday use.
Available in sDrive20i, sDrive30i, and M40i variants, the Z4 offers a range of four- and six-cylinder petrol engines with impressive fuel economy for a sports car—the entry-level model achieves near 40mpg claimed, with real-world figures around 35mpg. Whilst it doesn't quite match the Porsche Boxster for steering precision and chassis balance, the gap has narrowed considerably. The Z4 combines sportiness with practicality, offering plenty of standard equipment, good refinement, and a cushioned ride that makes it an amenable everyday proposition for those seeking a modern sports car that doesn't compromise on usability.
Best for: Drivers seeking a refined, usable sports car that balances performance with everyday practicality, those who appreciate modern technology and comfort, and enthusiasts wanting a capable roadster without extreme running costs.
Not ideal for: Purists demanding the most engaging driving dynamics (the Porsche Boxster remains superior), budget-conscious buyers deterred by higher running costs, or those requiring a fixed-roof option.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW Z4 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 24.5% | 4.1/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Z4 if: You seek a refined, usable sports car balancing performance with everyday practicality, appreciate modern technology and comfort, or want a capable roadster without extreme running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You demand the most engaging driving dynamics (Porsche Boxster), are budget-conscious about running costs, or require a fixed-roof option.
Competitive Position: The BMW Z4 (2019-present) is a strong contender in the modern roadster segment, offering excellent refinement, practicality, and usability. Whilst the Porsche 718 Boxster remains the ultimate driving experience with superior handling precision, the Z4 has narrowed the gap considerably and offers better everyday comfort and technology. The Audi TT Mk3 provides an alternative with similar ratings, whilst the Mercedes-Benz SLC lags behind in expert assessment. For those prioritising a balance of performance, comfort, and modern features, the Z4 represents an excellent choice that doesn't compromise on usability or refinement.

4.5 Overall rating
(8 reviews)Lovely shape and reliable unique car!!! I drove this car in the late 90s and since I love the style and how smoothly i use to drive the Z3.
Nice convertible with hard top. Pop up screen for sat nav etc. auto with option to convert to manual with steering wheel paddles.
Excellent car, absolutely beautiful. Good value for money. Electronic roof. Nothing is missing as far as I am concerned. It’s one hell of a vehicle. I would compare the style like an Aston Martin /Porsche
I have loved driving this car so far. It looks great, so smooth and quiet engine. Not overloaded with gadgets so easy to familiarise yourself and get driving with confidence.
I like the Z4 automatic 2.5 litre model. The mileage is good and the price reasonable.
