BMW Z4 (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More sporting than earlier Z4 generations, but still easy to live with | Not as engaging as a Porsche Boxster |
| Refined engines and a comfortable ride make long drives a pleasure | Relatively high running costs of M40i |
| Decent boot space for a sports car | No fixed-roof version (unless you count the Toyota Supra) |
Quick Summary
The BMW Z4 (2019-present) is a rear-wheel drive, two-seat roadster with a fabric hood that represents a significant step forward from its predecessor. Sharing its platform with the Toyota GR Supra, this latest generation features a shorter wheelbase and wider tracks, making it considerably more agile and responsive. The cabin boasts high-grade materials, good build quality, and an intuitive iDrive infotainment system. With a 281-litre boot and comprehensive standard equipment, the Z4 proves surprisingly practical for a sports car whilst delivering a refined, comfortable driving experience.
Available in three main specifications—Sport, M Sport, and M Performance—the Z4 offers flexibility to suit different preferences. Engine options include the sDrive20i with near-40mpg claimed economy, the sDrive30i, and the range-topping M40i. Whilst running costs are higher than typical family cars due to fuel consumption, insurance, and maintenance requirements, the Z4 remains relatively affordable for a performance vehicle. Though it doesn't quite match the Porsche Boxster for handling precision and steering feedback, the gap has narrowed considerably, making this an excellent choice for drivers seeking a refined, engaging roadster that's genuinely usable day-to-day.
Best for: Enthusiast drivers seeking a refined, engaging sports car that's practical for everyday use, those who appreciate German engineering and quality, and buyers wanting a more accessible alternative to the Porsche Boxster.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising the ultimate handling experience, those seeking the lowest running costs, or buyers wanting a fixed-roof convertible option.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW Z4 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 23.4% | 4.1/5 |
| Porsche 718 Boxster | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 26.3% | 4.3/5 |
| Audi TT Mk3 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz SLC | 2/5 | 4.7/5 | 30.4% | 3.8/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Z4 if: You're an enthusiast driver seeking a refined, engaging sports car that's practical for everyday use, appreciate German engineering and quality, or want a more accessible alternative to the Porsche Boxster.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the ultimate handling experience, seek the lowest running costs, or require a fixed-roof convertible option.
Competitive Position: The BMW Z4 (2019-present) occupies a compelling middle ground in the premium roadster segment. Whilst the Porsche 718 Boxster remains the handling benchmark with superior steering precision and chassis balance, the Z4 has narrowed the gap considerably and offers better everyday practicality and refinement. The Audi TT Mk3 provides better value for money, whilst the Mercedes-Benz SLC, despite strong user ratings, falls short on expert assessment. The Z4's combination of sporting credentials, refined engines, comfortable ride, and genuine usability makes it an excellent choice for drivers who want a serious sports car without sacrificing daily-drive comfort and convenience.

4.5 Overall rating
(8 reviews)Lovely shape and reliable unique car!!! I drove this car in the late 90s and since I love the style and how smoothly i use to drive the Z3.
Nice convertible with hard top. Pop up screen for sat nav etc. auto with option to convert to manual with steering wheel paddles.
Excellent car, absolutely beautiful. Good value for money. Electronic roof. Nothing is missing as far as I am concerned. It’s one hell of a vehicle. I would compare the style like an Aston Martin /Porsche
I have loved driving this car so far. It looks great, so smooth and quiet engine. Not overloaded with gadgets so easy to familiarise yourself and get driving with confidence.
I like the Z4 automatic 2.5 litre model. The mileage is good and the price reasonable.
