The drivers seat could do with an armrest. The DAB stereo switches off for no reason intermediately. It is a very good van and great value for money.

Citroen Berlingo Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Enormous boot and flexible seating | Some rivals have longer new-car warranties |
| Affordable to buy and run | Seven-seat XL models are expensive |
| Sliding rear doors | Leans a lot when cornering |
Quick Summary
The Citroen Berlingo is a no-nonsense, van-based people carrier that prioritises practicality above all else. Available as a five-seater or seven-seater XL, it offers up to 3,500 litres of boot space with seats folded flat, sliding rear doors, and ingenious storage solutions throughout. Despite its commercial origins, Citroen has successfully differentiated it with quirky styling cues, funky double-decker front lights, and lower-body cladding. The third-generation model launched in 2018 and received a refresh in 2023, bringing contemporary design whilst maintaining its honest, unpretentious approach to family motoring.
The Berlingo is available with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine (109bhp) or 1.5-litre diesel options (101bhp or 129bhp), with the latter offering excellent fuel economy beyond 50mpg. Petrol versions achieve around 45mpg, whilst both powertrains deliver smooth, quiet performance. The suspension soaks up bumps effectively, and wind and road noise are well suppressed for such a spacious cabin. Running costs are low, with insurance groups starting from 11, and the Berlingo is comfortable, surprisingly fun to drive, and ideal for those juggling family needs with self-employed work requirements.
Best for: Families needing maximum practicality, those requiring flexible seating and storage, self-employed workers, and budget-conscious buyers seeking affordable running costs.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising sporty handling, those seeking premium warranties, or buyers unwilling to accept body lean when cornering.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citroen Berlingo | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 37.4% | 4.4/5 |
| BMW 3 Series | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 39.4% | 4.6/5 |
| Peugeot e-Rifter | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 39.4% | 4.5/5 |
| Skoda Karoq | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 39.5% | 4.6/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Berlingo if: You need maximum practicality and flexible seating, require extensive storage solutions, are self-employed, or seek affordable running costs and purchase prices.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sporty handling, demand premium warranties, or prefer traditional SUV styling over van-based practicality.
Competitive Position: The Citroen Berlingo is a uniquely practical people carrier that excels in versatility and value. Whilst rivals like the Skoda Karoq and BMW 3 Series score higher on expert ratings, the Berlingo's honest, unpretentious design and exceptional storage make it unbeatable for families and self-employed workers. It offers comfortable, surprisingly enjoyable driving with low running costs and affordable purchase prices. The Peugeot e-Rifter provides an electric alternative, but the Berlingo's petrol and diesel options deliver proven reliability and excellent fuel economy. For those prioritising practicality over premium badge appeal, the Berlingo remains an outstanding choice.
