Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Rugged good looks | Basic and unsophisticated driving experience |
| Practical interior and roomy boot | Not as much fun as a Ford Fiesta Active |
| Low running costs | Despite the SUV looks, there's no 4x4 version |
Quick Summary
The Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) is a budget-friendly crossover that delivers SUV styling without the premium price tag. Built on the Sandero supermini platform, it features a raised ride height, rugged body cladding, and roof rails that transform its appearance into something far more adventurous. Whilst it lacks four-wheel drive and genuine off-road capability, the Stepway's SUV looks proved irresistible to British buyers, accounting for around 70% of all Sandero sales. The interior remains practical with a 320-litre boot (1,200 litres with rear seats folded), though the hard plastics and basic trim reflect its budget positioning.
The Stepway offers genuine value for money as a used purchase, with low running costs and straightforward maintenance. The 0.9-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivers respectable mid-range performance and around 45mpg in real-world driving, whilst the 1.5-litre diesel achieves approximately 50mpg. A naturally aspirated 1.0-litre petrol was added in 2019 for the Essential trim, though it feels underpowered. The diesel engine received a 5bhp boost and was renamed Blue dCi 95 the same year. Whilst the driving experience is basic compared to rivals like the Ford Fiesta Active, the Stepway's affordability, practicality, and rugged styling make it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking crossover appeal.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers wanting SUV styling, families seeking practical and affordable transport, and those prioritising low running costs over driving refinement.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking premium refinement, engaging handling dynamics, or genuine off-road capability, or those who value sophisticated interiors and advanced technology.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dacia Sandero Stepway | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 43.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Ford Fiesta Active | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.8% | 4.4/5 |
| Suzuki Ignis | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.5% | 4.1/5 |
| Hyundai i10 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.7% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Sandero Stepway if: You're on a tight budget, seeking SUV styling without premium pricing, or prioritising practicality and low running costs over driving refinement.
Consider alternatives if: You value engaging handling, premium interior quality, genuine off-road capability, or advanced technology features.
Competitive Position: The Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) stands out as the most affordable crossover option in its class, offering exceptional value for money. Whilst the Ford Fiesta Active provides superior driving dynamics and the Hyundai i10 delivers better overall refinement, the Stepway's combination of rugged styling, practicality, and low purchase and running costs makes it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers. The Suzuki Ignis offers similar positioning but at a higher price point. For those willing to accept a basic driving experience in exchange for genuine savings, the Stepway represents outstanding value in the used crossover market.
