Dacia Sandero (2013-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very cheap to buy | Modest safety standards |
| Roomy and practical cabin | Stingy list of standard kit |
| Affordable to fuel and insure | Basic fit and finish |
Quick Summary
The Dacia Sandero (2013-2020) is a budget supermini that prioritises value and practicality over premium features. Built on proven Renault technology, it offers straightforward, accessible motoring at an exceptionally low price point. The cabin is basic but functional, with hard plastics throughout, though a 2016 facelift added modest refinements. The rear provides excellent head- and legroom, surpassing rivals like the Vauxhall Corsa and VW Polo, whilst the 320-litre boot (1,200 litres with seats folded) is spacious for its class.
The Sandero isn't as engaging to drive as the Ford Fiesta or Seat Ibiza, but it performs adequately with a choice of engines: the 1.0-litre petrol is the sweetest option, whilst the 0.9-litre turbo offers good mid-range punch and the 1.5-litre diesel suits high-mileage drivers. Running costs are impressively low, with fuel economy around 40-60mpg depending on engine choice and tax bands favourable for pre-2017 models. Trim levels range from spartan Access models to well-equipped Laureate variants with sat-nav and parking sensors. It's a no-nonsense, reliable choice for budget-conscious buyers.
Best for: Budget-conscious drivers, families needing practical space, and those prioritising low purchase and running costs over premium features or driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking engaging handling, high safety standards, comprehensive standard equipment, or quality interior materials.

The Verdict
You should buy the Sandero if: You're on a tight budget, need a practical and spacious family car, or prioritise low purchase and running costs over premium features.
Consider alternatives if: You seek engaging driving dynamics, comprehensive safety features, high-quality interior materials, or extensive standard equipment.
Competitive Position: The Dacia Sandero (2013-2020) occupies a unique position in the used supermini market as the cheapest option available. Whilst the Skoda Fabia offers superior practicality and the Renault Clio provides more refinement, the Sandero's exceptional value proposition is unmatched. It delivers reliable, straightforward motoring with impressive interior space and low running costs. For budget-conscious buyers willing to accept basic styling and modest safety standards, the Sandero represents outstanding value, though those prioritising quality, handling, or equipment should consider the Fabia or Clio.

4.8 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Good value for sure, however aircon could brew more efficient.
Basic but a nice drive. Plenty of pull despite the 0.9 litre engine.
This car has got everything I need and more, superb smooth drive
Road handling was excellent and responded excellent when applying brakes on the Motorways. It did extremely good on fuel - petrol and it really was a pleasure to drive it!
I have the Access model which is a basic car. No central locking, no electric windows, however, these are not essential specs in my view. Great little runabout, cheap obviously, does the job.
