Ford B-Max (2012-2017) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lots of space inside for such a small car | Iffy Powershift automatic gearbox |
| Sliding rear doors make getting in and out easy | Some electrical issues |
| Fun to drive | Not as fashionable as a small SUV |
Quick Summary
The Ford B-Max (2012-2017) is a compact multi-purpose vehicle that cleverly combines practicality with driving enjoyment. Built on the same platform as the mk6 Ford Fiesta, it features innovative sliding rear doors that create a 150cm opening—double the typical width—making access exceptionally easy for child seats and passengers. Despite its upright MPV body, the B-Max delivers surprising agility and sharp steering, with well-contained body roll and a composed ride that absorbs bumps with executive saloon refinement. The interior is smartly packaged with space for five occupants, though boot storage lags slightly behind key rivals at 318 litres with seats in place, expanding to 1,386 litres when folded flat.
Engine options include efficient 1.0-litre turbocharged EcoBoost petrol units (99bhp and 118bhp variants) delivering around 40mpg in real-world driving, alongside conventional 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol engines. Diesel alternatives comprise 1.5-litre and 1.6-litre TDCi units, with the 95hp 1.5-litre offering impressive fuel economy and brisk performance. A slick five-speed manual gearbox comes standard, whilst a six-speed Powershift automatic is available with the 1.6-litre petrol. Insurance groups are low (7-13), and servicing costs are affordable. As a used car, the B-Max represents excellent value, offering practicality in a compact package with engaging driving dynamics rarely found in this class.
Best for: Families seeking extra space without the bulk of a larger MPV, drivers wanting practicality combined with engaging handling, and those prioritising easy access for children and elderly passengers.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking the latest infotainment technology, those preferring the fashion appeal of a small SUV, or those requiring the absolute maximum boot space in this segment.

The Verdict
You should buy the B-Max if: You're seeking a practical compact MPV with engaging driving dynamics, need easy access for children and elderly passengers, or want excellent value in a spacious small car.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the latest infotainment technology, prefer the fashion appeal of a small SUV, or require maximum boot space in this segment.
Competitive Position: The Ford B-Max (2012-2017) stands as the class leader among compact multi-purpose vehicles, outperforming rivals such as the Nissan Note and Citroën C3 Picasso in driving dynamics and practicality. Its innovative sliding rear doors, Fiesta-derived handling, and surprising refinement make it a standout choice. Whilst the Honda Jazz offers comparable user ratings and the Citroën C3 Picasso boasts more available deals, the B-Max uniquely combines engaging driving with family-friendly practicality. As compact MPVs have become automotive history, a used Ford B-Max remains the definitive choice for buyers wanting practicality without sacrificing driving pleasure or affordability.

(5 reviews)Customers say
The Ford B-Max has received positive feedback from owners for its roomy interior, practical features like sliding doors, and strong performance. Many drivers appreciate the spacious leg room and thoughtful additions such as parking sensors and a reverse camera. However, some have raised concerns about the small appearance of the wheels and a blind spot created by the door design, particularly affecting visibility at junctions. There's a collective disappointment among fans that production ended in 2018, as many view this vehicle as a true gem.

What people say
It’s a lovely car. I have had 3 and am so sad that they stopped manufacturing them in 2018. I would love a newer model. The ecoboost makes it a really nippy car. The leg room in the back seats is very spacious. The sliding doors are ideal when parked between 2 cars and you have children in the back. It prevents them smacking the door into the other cars when opening them.
Being a Ford its Reliable . Good points. Cheap to run, quiet and pokey 1ltr turbo. No centre pillars in between the doors. Bad points. Wet belt, over a £1000 to replace, stupid idea. Needs chain drive and this engine would see over 200k miles easy. Leak in the boot and door panel is common. Would prefer a sunroof to the panoramic roof.
No Bluetooth or sat nav Drives lovely Sliding back door which is helpful with kids
I absolutely love the Bmax.! The ecoboost is economical and very cheap to tax. As a blue badge holder I love the high driving position. The best feature by far is the back sliding doors, which are brilliant for small children, and the boot size is great. I would have given five stars but for the blind spot where the front and back doors meet - it can make watching for traffic coming from the right at a junction difficult to see if you are turning left and craning your neck to see past it. Such a shame production was stopped on this gem of a car.
Ideal small SUV Titanium Model has all the extras one needs -easy to drive good gearbox and the 3 Cylinder Model has adequate acceleration-Mine Has Leather seats -Reverse Camera and Parking sensers- All in all brilliant small SUV
