Ford C-Max (2011-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Fun to drive for an MPV | Pre-facelift cars feel a bit cheap inside |
| Practical and roomy cabin | Models with an auto gearbox have worse fuel economy |
| Grand C-Max has room for seven and sliding doors | Not as many driver aids as some more modern MPVs |
Quick Summary
The Ford C-Max (2011-2019) is a compact MPV that combines practicality with engaging driving dynamics. This second-generation model features sharper styling than its predecessor and offers seating for five in standard form or seven in the Grand C-Max variant. With a 471-litre boot that expands to 1,851 litres with rear seats folded, it provides excellent versatility for families. A 2015 facelift brought a reprofiled nose and enhanced infotainment with the SYNC3 system, making later models considerably more appealing inside.
The C-Max excels where rivals like the Renault Scenic and Citroën C4 Picasso fall short: it's more robust, reliable, and genuinely enjoyable to drive. A comprehensive engine range includes efficient petrol and diesel options, with the 1.5-litre TDCi diesel delivering up to 74.3mpg. Running costs are reasonable, with servicing available at competitive independent garages. While pre-facelift models have dated interiors and automatic gearboxes compromise efficiency, the C-Max remains an excellent all-rounder for families seeking practicality without sacrificing driving pleasure.
Best for: Families needing spacious, practical transport with engaging driving dynamics, those seeking good value in the MPV market, and buyers wanting seven-seat flexibility (Grand C-Max).
Not ideal for: Those prioritising the most interior space or flexibility, buyers wanting the latest driver assistance features, or those seeking premium interior quality in pre-facelift models.

The Verdict
You should buy the C-Max if: You're a family needing spacious, practical transport with engaging driving dynamics, seeking good value in the MPV market, or wanting seven-seat flexibility with the Grand C-Max.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior space and flexibility, want the latest driver assistance features, or require premium interior quality throughout the model range.
Competitive Position: The Ford C-Max (2011-2019) is a strong contender in the MPV segment, offering an engaging driving experience that rivals cannot match. Whilst the Citroën C4 Picasso provides more distinctive styling and greater interior flexibility, the C-Max is more robust and reliable. It outperforms the Vauxhall Astra in practicality and the Ford Focus in passenger space. The C-Max represents excellent value for families seeking a well-rounded MPV that doesn't compromise on driving enjoyment, making it a highly sensible choice in a declining market segment where prices remain competitive.

(11 reviews)Customers say
The Ford C-MAX is widely appreciated for its spacious interior, comfortable driving experience, and economical fuel consumption. Drivers especially like the high seating position and versatile storage options, making it a great choice for families and those needing extra room. However, some owners find the lack of advanced features such as electric retractable mirrors and the absence of a spare tire to be drawbacks. Overall, the C-MAX is often seen as a value-packed option with a smooth ride.

What people say
My second For Max. Very smooth driving, economical, big boot capacity and ample legroom in the back. This version does not have electric retractable mirrors, which is disappointing, but has cruise control and climate. So you win some. Cant go into clean air zone.
I bought the Titanium version which has lots of extras, so am very pleased with my new car. 9 years old but good value as far as I'm concerned, well suited to my needs.
My second c-max great features and good value would buy again
I love the car, apparently over priced based on Motorway buying site but I'd save again if need to replace.
Hi, car is way way way to expensive, its 16 years old and a write off , its priced way above normal retail price for a non write off !!!!!!!!
