Ford C-Max (2011-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Fun to drive for an MPV | Pre-facelift cars feel a bit cheap inside |
| Practical and roomy cabin | Models with an auto gearbox have worse fuel economy |
| Grand C-Max has room for seven and sliding doors | Not as many driver aids as some more modern MPVs |
Quick Summary
The Ford C-Max (2011-2019) is a compact MPV that built on the Focus hatchback's foundations, offering increased interior space without a significantly larger footprint. This second-generation model features sharper looks and seating for five, or seven in the Grand C-Max variant. It's renowned for its enjoyable driving dynamics and a strong range of engines, with a 2015 facelift bringing exterior and interior refinements, including an improved infotainment system.
Practicality is a key strength, with ample head and legroom, a generous 471-litre boot (expanding to 1,851 litres with seats folded), and versatile sliding/folding rear seats. Engine options are efficient, with later 1.5 TDCi diesels achieving up to 74.3mpg, making for low running costs. Trim levels like Zetec, Titanium, and Titanium X offer a good balance of features, though later models with the SYNC3 infotainment system are considerably better. While not the absolute most practical MPV, its blend of family utility and engaging drive makes it a compelling choice.
Best for: Families needing versatile space, drivers who want an enjoyable driving experience even in an MPV, and those looking for good value in the used market.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising the absolute maximum interior flexibility (e.g., three individual rear ISOFIX seats like the C4 Picasso), or those who expect the latest infotainment in pre-facelift models.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford C-Max | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 31.7% | 4.2/5 |
| Citroen C4 Picasso | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 55.1% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the C-Max if: You're a family needing versatile space, a driver who wants an enjoyable driving experience even in an MPV, or someone looking for good value in the used market.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the absolute maximum interior flexibility (e.g., three individual rear ISOFIX seats like the C4 Picasso), or expect the latest infotainment as standard in pre-facelift models.
Competitive Position: The Ford C-Max (2011-2019) stands out in the used MPV market for its engaging driving experience, a trait often lacking in rivals. While some competitors like the Citroen C4 Picasso might offer slightly greater interior flexibility, the C-Max provides a robust, reliable, and fun-to-drive package. Its blend of practicality, efficient engines, and affordability makes it a strong contender for families seeking a versatile and enjoyable car without the higher prices of newer SUVs.

4.7 Overall rating
(23 reviews)My second For Max. Very smooth driving, economical, big boot capacity and ample legroom in the back. This version does not have electric retractable mirrors, which is disappointing, but has cruise control and climate. So you win some. Cant go into clean air zone.
My second c-max great features and good value would buy again
I liked the C Max because it had the space inside the car and boot that I was looking for. It also had all the features I was looking for like air con, pas and lumbar support. Its relatively cheap to run easy on the gas and a nice comfortable drive. I have two small dogs as apposed to two small children so its just the right size which ever way your looking for that kind of size car. The boot is great plenty of room for a pushchair or wheelchair. Plus all the other bits and bobs we need to have with us. The particular model I bought is great. I would compare it to a Citreon Xsara Picasso very simila .
Lacks front and rear sensors - or these are not listed in the advertising, and it lacks electric folding wing-mirrors
Have owned one before and it offers good luggage area. The folded down seating also offers a vast space for trips to the tip with garden and general rubbish. The seating is easy to use. The range of extras available gives you a great way to customise your vehicle.
