Ford Edge (2016-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Comfortable for long-distance driving | Not as sharp to drive as most Fords |
| Very spacious cabin and boot | Earlier engines are less efficient than later units |
| Lots of kit as standard | Some reliability issues with dual-mass flywheels |
Quick Summary
The Ford Edge (2016-2020) is a big, well-equipped, and comfortable family SUV that offers more space and equipment than most rivals at a competitive price point. Originally intended for the North American market, Ford brought the Edge to Europe to capitalise on the SUV boom. Despite its imposing exterior, the car is surprisingly easy to live with, featuring an exceptionally spacious cabin with abundant legroom, headroom, and shoulder room for all passengers. The boot offers 602 litres with seats in place, expanding to 1,688 litres with the rear seats folded, making it ideal for families requiring substantial carrying capacity.
The Edge is a refined long-distance cruiser powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine available in various outputs. Whilst not the sharpest-handling Ford, it excels at motorway driving with smooth, comfortable ride quality and low wind and road noise. Equipment levels are generous across all trims, including dual-zone climate control, a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, parking sensors, and a rearview camera. The 2018 facelift introduced the eight-speed torque converter automatic, which best suits the car's character. Running costs are reasonable, with fuel economy reaching up to 42.4mpg, and servicing is affordable through Ford's extensive dealer network. Although the Edge went off sale in 2019, used examples represent excellent value, particularly when purchased at the right price point.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped SUV for long-distance driving, those prioritising interior space and practicality over driving dynamics, and budget-conscious buyers wanting premium features at a lower cost.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking sharp handling and driving engagement, those concerned about rapid depreciation, or buyers requiring a vehicle with strong resale value comparable to German rivals.

The Verdict
You should buy the Edge if: You're seeking a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped SUV for long-distance driving, prioritising interior space and practicality over driving dynamics, or looking for premium features at a lower cost than German rivals.
Consider alternatives if: You require sharp handling and driving engagement, are concerned about rapid depreciation, or need a vehicle with strong resale value comparable to German premium brands.
Competitive Position: The Ford Edge (2016-2020) is a strong contender in the mid-size SUV market, offering exceptional space, comfort, and equipment at a competitive price. Whilst the BMW X3 edges ahead on driving dynamics and overall rating, and the Volkswagen Touareg boasts superior user satisfaction, the Edge delivers outstanding value for families prioritising practicality and comfort. Its generous interior dimensions, comprehensive standard equipment, and refined motorway manners make it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers willing to accept less sharp handling in exchange for space and affordability. The Edge's rapid depreciation, however, means careful purchasing at the right price point is essential to maximise value.

The Ford Edge has garnered positive feedback for its comfort, especially with features like heated leather seats and a quality sound system. Many drivers appreciate its spacious interior and overall performance. However, some have noted challenges with maneuvering, particularly due to its turning circle. Overall, the Edge is viewed as a stylish and practical choice for drivers seeking a larger vehicle that handles well.

What people say
Not sure why there aren't more of these on the road, 4wd, good size, economical, nice style and extremely comfortable.
Very pleased , a nice car , worth a go , loads of spec
On researching the ford edge I found it’s not got a very good full turning circle. I live in very winding lanes and need to turn around in the road slot so it won’t be for me. Shame because it looked very good from the advert
Having run a 2016 Edge Titanium 2.0 auto with Luxury Pack (full leather, panoramic roof, heated/cooled seats, etc.,) for over 5 1/2 years, I wanted to update the model knowing that Ford stopped selling them in the U.K in 2019. The ST-Line model purchased is very similarly specified to the Titanium which means a high level - with additional ‘bells and whistles’ such as blind spot indicators, B&O sound system, front camera (in addition to rear reversing camera), different transmission, etc, etc; in other words, a lot of car for your money and comparable with cars carrying a premium badge. Styling has been upgraded with some real changes (improvements) to body styling with a grea5 paint finish. The Edge is a large car but handles well and relatively economical. I suspect the Eco-blue engine may not be as frugal as the ‘old’ TDi but it’s better for the environment. This model is still available in the U.S. -what a pity they’re not bringing them over here.
Great car. Lovely to drive with plenty of gadgets.
