This car is particularly good value if it includes the winter and City packs.

The car feels somewhat dated compared to rivals. The interior does not have much quality with a tiny entertainment screen. The lower powered model felt very underpowered so, Id consider paying the extra for the far better Fiesta.

Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More practical than most city cars | Dull looks |
| The majority of Ka+ models have smartphone mirroring | Lacklustre engines |
| Supple ride | Down-market interior |
Quick Summary
The Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) is a practical city car that sits between the traditional city car and supermini segments. Based on the Fiesta platform, it offers more interior space than its predecessor, with a higher roofline and rear doors providing improved accessibility. The 270-litre boot expands to 849 litres with the rear seats folded. Despite its bland styling, the Ka+ delivers a supple ride and responsive handling inherited from its Fiesta foundations, with precise controls and a well-weighted five-speed manual gearbox.
Engine options include two 1.2-litre petrol variants (68bhp and 74bhp) and a 1.5-litre diesel (94bhp) introduced at the 2018 facelift. Fuel economy ranges from 49.5mpg to 68.9mpg depending on engine choice. The post-2018 models benefit from the SYNC3 touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, the Ka+ is undermined by underpowered petrol engines and a cost-conscious interior with hard plastics. Low insurance groups and competitive servicing costs make it economical to run, though it remains a minority choice in a crowded segment.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking practicality and a supple ride, those needing more space than a traditional city car, and drivers covering high mileage (diesel option).
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising stylish design, powerful engines, or premium interior quality, or those seeking the best-in-class handling and refinement.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Ka+ | 2/5 | 4.0/5 | 36.1% | 3.9/5 |
| Dacia Sandero | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 36.0% | 4.2/5 |
| Skoda Citigo | 5/5 | 4.2/5 | 29.9% | 4.3/5 |
| Hyundai i10 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.7% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Ka+ if: You're on a tight budget, seeking practicality and a supple ride, or need more space than a traditional city car without paying supermini prices.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise stylish design, powerful engines, premium interior quality, or the best-in-class handling and refinement.
Competitive Position: The Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) occupies an awkward middle ground between city cars and superminis, which works against it in a competitive segment. Whilst it benefits from Fiesta-derived handling and a supple ride, the lacklustre petrol engines and cost-conscious interior undermine its appeal. The Hyundai i10 offers superior on-road ability, higher interior quality, and more equipment, whilst the Skoda Citigo and Dacia Sandero provide stronger overall propositions. The Ka+ remains a sensible choice for budget-conscious buyers prioritising practicality, but it lacks the refinement and appeal of its key rivals.
