Ford Transit Custom (2012-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Better to drive than most commercial vehicles | Bouncy ride if van isn't loaded |
| Tough and durable mechanical parts | Pre-2018 facelift vans have less storage space in the cab |
| High payloads | There was no electric version |
Quick Summary
The Ford Transit Custom (2012-2022) is a versatile, hardworking medium-sized van that sits perfectly between Ford's smaller Transit Connect and larger Transit models. This generation underwent significant updates, including a 2018 facelift that modernised the cab with improved storage, updated infotainment, and a refreshed exterior featuring slimmer headlights and LED daytime running lights. The 2019 introduction of the Plug-In Hybrid variant offered an electric-only range of 35 miles and total driving range of 310 miles, whilst the return of the fuel-sipping Econetic diesel provided excellent economy for cost-conscious operators.
Available in multiple configurations with two body lengths (L1 and L2) and two heights (H1 and H2), the Transit Custom can be tailored to suit various business needs, from single-cab vans to Double Cab and Kombi variants with multiple seating rows. The 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine dominated the line-up, offering 104bhp to 182bhp depending on tune, whilst earlier models featured 2.2-litre TDCi turbodiesels. With payloads reaching up to 1,459kg, excellent driving dynamics for a commercial vehicle, and a wide range of trim levels from spartan Leader to premium MS-RT, the Transit Custom delivers practicality, durability, and surprising refinement. Running costs are competitive, particularly with the 128bhp mild hybrid achieving up to 55.4mpg.
Best for: Business owners and fleet operators seeking a versatile, hardworking van with excellent payload capacity, drivers prioritising a car-like driving experience in a commercial vehicle, and those needing flexible configurations for passengers and cargo.
Not ideal for: Buyers requiring an electric van option, those who frequently drive unladen and prefer a smooth ride, or operators needing maximum cab storage in pre-2018 models.

The Verdict
You should buy the Transit Custom if: You're a business owner or fleet operator seeking a versatile, hardworking van with excellent payload capacity, you prioritise a car-like driving experience in a commercial vehicle, or you need flexible configurations for passengers and cargo.
Consider alternatives if: You require an electric van option, frequently drive unladen and prefer a smooth ride, or need maximum cab storage in a pre-2018 model.
Competitive Position: The Ford Transit Custom (2012-2022) is a strong contender in the medium-sized van market, offering excellent versatility, durability, and driving dynamics that surpass most commercial rivals. Whilst the Vauxhall Vivaro edges ahead with slightly better user ratings and deal availability, the Transit Custom matches or exceeds competitors in expert ratings and overall CarGurus scores. Its superior payload capacity, flexible configurations, and improved refinement make it an excellent choice for operators prioritising practicality and driving experience. The Transit Custom's variety of trim levels and engine options, combined with competitive running costs, position it as a default choice for many businesses.
