Jeep Grand Cherokee Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Comfy on the road, capable off it | It's hugely expensive |
| High quality interior | No seven-seater option |
| Lots of technology on board | European rivals do most things a little better |
Quick Summary
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is America's answer to the Range Rover Sport, a large SUV designed for comfort, refinement, and sophistication on-road, while being virtually unstoppable off-road. The latest fifth-generation model, available exclusively as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in the UK, represents a significant improvement over its predecessors. It competes with luxury SUVs like the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE, as well as more rugged options, offering a unique blend of on-road polish and impressive off-road capability, though it remains a premium, high-cost vehicle.
This substantial SUV offers excellent practicality with a 580-litre boot and class-leading rear legroom, though it surprisingly lacks a seven-seat option. Its 4XE PHEV drivetrain delivers 380bhp, capable of 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds, and up to 31 miles of electric-only range (WLTP). While the petrol engine can be noisy under hard acceleration, the air suspension provides a comfortable and controlled ride. The interior boasts Jeep's Uconnect 5 infotainment system with multiple screens, though its complexity can be a drawback. Running costs can be low if the PHEV is utilised correctly, but the car itself is expensive to buy and likely to suffer heavier depreciation than some rivals.
Best for: Off-road enthusiasts, those seeking a luxurious and comfortable large SUV with PHEV efficiency potential, buyers who value interior technology and practicality.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those needing a seven-seater, buyers prioritising ultimate on-road driving dynamics over comfort/off-road prowess, or those expecting the badge appeal and refinement of some European rivals in all areas.

The Verdict
You should buy the Grand Cherokee if: You're an off-road enthusiast, seeking a luxurious and comfortable large SUV with PHEV efficiency potential, or value interior technology and practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You're on a tight budget, require a seven-seater, prioritise ultimate on-road driving dynamics, or expect the badge appeal and refinement of some European rivals in all areas.
Competitive Position: The latest Jeep Grand Cherokee is a much-improved offering, closing the gap to its European luxury SUV rivals. It excels in off-road capability, practicality, and interior technology, and its PHEV drivetrain offers a compelling blend of performance and efficiency potential. While it remains an expensive purchase with potential depreciation concerns, its unique proposition as a refined yet rugged large SUV makes it a strong contender for buyers seeking a distinctive and capable vehicle.

4.6 Overall rating
(11 reviews)Good value missing nothing I would compare to range rover
Brilliant vehicle. I’ve had 4 of them. Used for towing horse box. The pulling power is more than sufficient along with superb reliability. Saying that, preventative maintenance is my mantra. A little expensive on day to day running costs but, you get what you pay for. Luxury and comfort with all the toys. Looking for number 5.
Ive just got my Jeep and I can honestly say I love it. Very smooth ride indeed loads of extras and just what I needed to pull my Horse Trailer. Very quite running for a Deisel, best Big Truck Ive owned Runs and drives as good as it looks, Alot of car for the money
Excellent value for money with so many extras comfort and punchy this car is no slouch and will climb mountains when required steady and sturdy unbreakable with a remarkable 3.0 l Merc engine give good mpg for its size
This car is a SP{ORT Utility Vehicle , 0-60 in 5 seconds, top speed 160mph. Has every bell and whistle. I am compering this with my 2002 Grand Cherokee 4.7litre. Immaculate condition and a good price.
