Kia Sorento (2020-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent value for a seven-seat SUV | Hybrids having lower towing limits than diesels |
| Spacious and high-quality interior | BMW and Audi rivals are better to drive |
| Wide engine range including hybrid and plug-in hybrid | Feels large and bulky to drive in towns |
Quick Summary
The Kia Sorento is a seven-seat family SUV that has fully embraced electrification in its current, fourth-generation form. Introduced in 2020 and updated with a mild facelift in 2024, the latest Sorento features revised styling, an upgraded interior, and a strong focus on hybrid power. Two hybrid options are available: the self-charging hybrid (HEV) pairs a 1.6-litre T-GDi petrol engine with an electric motor for 212bhp (235bhp for 2026), whilst the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) offers 248bhp (284bhp for 2026) with an official electric-only range of 34 miles. A 2.2-litre diesel with 190bhp remains available for those prioritising torque and towing ability.
The fourth-generation Sorento is noticeably bigger than its predecessor, offering significantly more interior space across all three rows. Boot space ranges from 604 to 616 litres with seats folded, expanding to 1,996 litres with all passengers removed. The cabin is upmarket and well-equipped, with USB ports and air vents in all three rows. Whilst not as engaging as an Audi Q5 or BMW X3, the Sorento prioritises comfort and refinement, settling beautifully on motorways and A-roads. Running costs are reasonable, with the hybrid returning 39.8-42.2mpg and the diesel achieving 42.8-43.5mpg. The plug-in hybrid offers the lowest running costs if you can charge regularly at home.
Best for: Families needing seven seats, those prioritising practicality and space, buyers seeking excellent value in the premium SUV segment, and those with caravans or horsebox trailers (diesel version).
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking the finest handling dynamics, those unwilling to pay premium rate VED on post-facelift models, or buyers requiring maximum electric-only range from a plug-in hybrid.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kia Sorento | 5/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.9% | 4.5/5 |
| Hyundai Santa Fe | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.5% | 4.3/5 |
| Skoda Kodiaq | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.1% | 4.4/5 |
| Land Rover Discovery Sport | 4/5 | 4.0/5 | 30.2% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Sorento if: You're a family needing seven seats, prioritising practicality and space, seeking excellent value in the premium SUV segment, or towing a caravan or horsebox trailer.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the finest handling dynamics, wish to avoid premium rate VED, or require maximum electric-only range from a plug-in hybrid.
Competitive Position: The Kia Sorento is the strongest contender in the seven-seat SUV market, offering exceptional value, spaciousness, and quality that rivals premium brands. Whilst the Hyundai Santa Fe and Skoda Kodiaq are competent alternatives, the Sorento edges ahead with its superior expert rating and excellent practicality. The Land Rover Discovery Sport, though prestigious, offers less value and lower user satisfaction. If practicality and space are your priorities, the Sorento is difficult to beat without spending considerably more.

4.6 Overall rating
(29 reviews)Lovely big car, very comfy and great to drive. Not as economical as the Sportage but worth it for the extra space. This is the second one Ive bought as I really enjoy the drive.
This car has got all possible futures. The ratio price/quality is amazing. One disappointment - even the dearest variant doesnt offer a driver seat massage. Ive compared Kia Sorento KX4 with Skoda Kodiaq Edition.
One of the best 7 seaters, but is to expensive for used cars.
a bit slow on the overtaking and a bit boaty
Good car with all what you need inside. Especially 4 series in nice with Sun roof. Good engines Good engineering.
