It is a good small mpv. I have diesel which is very economical. I think it is quite different to the competitors and I think Kia made a real error to withdraw it from their range. I will struggle to find a replacement.

Kia Venga (2009-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Versatile family-friendly cabin | Dull to drive |
| Some of the original seven-year warranty should still cover recent examples | Disappointing fuel economy |
| Generous kit on all models bar the entry-level '1' | More reliability issues than you'd expect of a Kia |
Quick Summary
The Kia Venga (2009-2019) occupies a middle ground between a hatchback and a people carrier, designed to offer greater practicality than a typical supermini. It features a spacious and versatile cabin with clever 60:40 split-folding rear seats that slide fore and aft, accommodating four adults comfortably with generous headroom and legroom. The boot is exceptionally practical, offering 440 litres in its smallest configuration and expanding to a cavernous 1,253 litres with the rear seats folded flat. Standard equipment levels are generous across most trim levels, particularly the 3 and 4 versions, which include climate control, satnav, and a responsive touchscreen infotainment system.
However, the Venga's driving experience is disappointing. Its engines—ranging from 1.4 to 1.6-litre petrol and diesel options—lack performance and are noisy when revved, whilst the ride is bumpy at low speeds and body roll is excessive. Real-world fuel consumption significantly exceeds official figures, with owners reporting thirsty performance across the range. Running costs are further hampered by higher insurance groups and variable tax implications depending on registration date. Despite these drawbacks, the Venga's spacious interior, practical design, and generous equipment make it appealing to families and older drivers seeking affordable space and comfort.
Best for: Families prioritising interior space and practicality, elderly drivers appreciating low sills and high seating positions, and those seeking an affordable small automatic car without a CVT transmission.
Not ideal for: Drivers valuing engaging handling, responsive performance, or fuel efficiency, and those unwilling to compromise on driving dynamics for practicality.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kia Venga | 2/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.6% | 3.9/5 |
| Honda Jazz | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 31.2% | 4.4/5 |
| Ford B-Max | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.5% | 4.4/5 |
| Citroën C3 Picasso | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 44.3% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Venga if: You prioritise interior space and practicality, appreciate high seating positions and low sills, or seek an affordable small automatic car without a CVT transmission.
Consider alternatives if: You value engaging handling, responsive performance, fuel efficiency, or expect fewer reliability issues from a mainstream manufacturer.
Competitive Position: The Kia Venga (2009-2019) is a practical family-oriented mini-MPV that excels in interior versatility and equipment levels, particularly on higher trims. However, it lags significantly behind rivals like the Ford B-Max and Honda Jazz in driving dynamics and overall appeal. Whilst the Venga offers excellent space at a budget price, its dull driving experience, disappointing fuel economy, and reliability concerns make it a less compelling choice than competitors. The Citroën C3 Picasso offers better value with more available deals, whilst the Honda Jazz and Ford B-Max deliver superior driving experiences. The Venga remains best suited to buyers prioritising practicality and affordability over driving enjoyment.
