Land Rover Discovery 4 (2009-2016) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Immensely capable off road | Lots of reliability worries |
| Superbly comfortable on tarmac | High running costs demand deep pockets |
| Roomy and practical seven-seat cabin | Not as sharp to drive as the equivalent Audi or BMW |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Discovery 4 (2009-2016) is a versatile seven-seat SUV equally at home at a fine restaurant or tackling muddy terrain. Its handsome, well-designed interior features chunky plastics, expensive leather, and quality switchgear. On the road, it delivers exceptional comfort with suspension tuned for a smooth ride rather than sporty handling. Whilst not as engaging as a BMW X5 or Audi Q7 in corners, it feels controlled, stable, and offers plenty of grip. The cabin is spacious and practical, with individual rear seats that fold separately, a split tailgate, and a cavernous boot when seats are folded.
However, the Discovery 4 comes with significant caveats. It has a reputation for patchy reliability, and genuinely reliable examples are increasingly rare. Running costs are substantial, with fuel consumption typically 25-30mpg and high emissions placing most models in the second-highest tax band. Timing belt changes on the 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre engines are expensive four-figure jobs. Servicing at main dealers is costly, though independent specialists offer better value. Despite these challenges, a well-maintained Discovery 4 offers unmatched practicality, comfort, and off-road ability for those willing to invest in proper maintenance.
Best for: Families needing seven seats, those seeking a capable off-roader with on-road comfort, and buyers with sufficient budget for high running costs and potential repairs.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising reliability, or drivers seeking sharp handling comparable to premium German rivals.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Land Rover Discovery 4 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 32.3% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X5 E70 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.1% | 4.2/5 |
| Volvo XC90 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 32.4% | 4.3/5 |
| Toyota Land Cruiser | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 21.6% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Discovery 4 if: You need seven seats, seek a capable off-roader with excellent on-road comfort, and have the budget for high running costs and potential repairs.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise reliability, seek sharp handling comparable to premium German rivals, or need to minimise running costs.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Discovery 4 is a formidable contender in the premium seven-seat SUV market, offering unmatched practicality, comfort, and off-road capability. Whilst the BMW X5 E70 and Volvo XC90 match it for expert ratings and user satisfaction, the Discovery 4 stands apart with its genuine off-road prowess and spacious seven-seat configuration. However, reliability concerns and substantial running costs set it apart from rivals. The Toyota Land Cruiser offers superior reliability but at a higher price point. For buyers willing to invest in proper maintenance and accept high fuel and tax bills, the Discovery 4 remains an exceptional all-rounder.

What people say
This Car offers all the requirements for my family. Plenty of space for the growing children, plenty of space for all our ‘stuff’. Very safe and able to tow.
I would suggest you have to have some sort of need for a Discovery, I shoot. I understand that should you wish to make your whole life less meaningful and buy a caravan, they make excellent towing vehicles. They are an excellent mix of ruggedness and style, luxury and practicality, whilst being more ageless than more popular cars. Don’t buy one thinking you can run it for nothing, this is my second Discovery, they do absorb a fair bit of budget, only you can decide if the price is worth it.
Most important car has a full service history, this model is not fully loaded but from my experience with discovery’s more kit fitted, more to go wrong.hoping I’ve found a good one. This will be my 5th discovery over a 25 year period. Car looks very good.
Wonderful car let down by fragile build and huge costs to therefore maintain.
Having a discovery 4 is comfort and reliable 4x4 vehicle this a vehicle that has most comfort and excellent fuel mileage for a top 4x4 vehicle I just recommend you should drive one for yourself and see just how good these vehicles are and road handling to
