Land Rover Discovery Sport (2014-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Extremely capable off road | Poor reliability record |
| Versatile and practical seven-seat cabin | Five-seat models are worth less than seven-seaters |
| Well judged ride and handling balance | The car's weight takes the edge off its performance |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Discovery Sport (2014-present) is a versatile seven-seat SUV that replaced the ageing Freelander. When launched, its seven-seat option set it apart from premium rivals like BMW and Audi, which required buyers to upgrade to larger models for such capacity. The Discovery Sport shares its underpinnings with the Range Rover Evoque, delivering a well-balanced combination of comfort and capability. A significant facelift in late 2020 introduced a sleek interior with premium materials, a crisp touchscreen infotainment system, and improved controls. The driving position is particularly satisfying, with commanding views and well-positioned armrests, whilst the middle row offers generous space with minimal spine hump intrusion.
Off-road, the Discovery Sport proves as capable as expected from a Land Rover, whilst excelling on-road with a comfortable ride that smoothes out bumps without excessive softness. It handles surprisingly well in corners with progressive steering and excellent grip, though its weight means engines require significant effort for brisk acceleration. Diesel engines, particularly the D150 in front-wheel-drive form, achieve 40-45mpg, whilst all-wheel-drive variants manage around 35mpg. Petrol models are thirstier, typically delivering under 30mpg. All modern engines use timing chains, reducing long-term maintenance costs. However, the Discovery Sport's poor reliability reputation remains a concern, though extended warranties can mitigate this risk.
Best for: Families seeking a versatile, practical seven-seat SUV with premium feel, those requiring off-road capability, and buyers prioritising comfort and handling balance over outright performance.
Not ideal for: Those concerned about reliability issues, buyers seeking maximum fuel economy, or those unwilling to invest in extended warranty protection.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Land Rover Discovery Sport | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.1% | 4.5/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 35.6% | 4.2/5 |
| Volkswagen Tiguan | 5/5 | 4.8/5 | 35.2% | 4.6/5 |
| BMW X3 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.4% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Discovery Sport if: You need a versatile, practical seven-seat SUV with premium feel, require off-road capability, or prioritise comfort and handling balance.
Consider alternatives if: You are concerned about reliability issues, seeking maximum fuel economy, or unwilling to invest in extended warranty protection.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Discovery Sport is one of the most well-rounded seven-seat SUVs available, offering exceptional versatility and a comfortable, composed driving experience. Whilst its poor reliability record is a genuine concern, the benefits are manifold: the spacious, flexible cabin with independent folding seats, premium interior (on later models), and balanced ride and handling make it highly appealing. Against rivals like the Volkswagen Tiguan and BMW X3, which score higher on expert ratings, the Discovery Sport holds its own with superior practicality and seven-seat versatility. The Mercedes-Benz GLB offers similar seven-seat appeal but with a lower overall rating. For buyers prepared to mitigate reliability risks through extended warranties, the Discovery Sport remains an excellent choice for families and those valuing versatility over outright performance.
