Lexus RX 450h (2015-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| The hybrid is fuel-efficient for a luxury SUV | The seven-seat RX L is thirstier than the five-seat RX |
| Well-deserved reputation for reliability | Doesn't drive as well as a BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne |
| Superb service from Lexus dealers | The RX 200t is thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Lexus RX 450h (2015-2023) is an understated luxury SUV that prioritises comfort, refinement, and reliability over aggressive styling or dynamic handling. This fourth-generation model offers a spacious five-seat cabin with the option of a seven-seat RX L variant introduced in 2018. The hybrid powertrain delivers impressive fuel economy of 35.7-36.2mpg combined, making it competitive amongst premium large SUVs. With a 453-litre boot and comprehensive standard equipment across all trim levels, the RX provides a thoroughly refined and practical ownership experience.
The RX 450h is exceptionally well-made and exceptionally reliable, backed by Lexus's renowned customer-focused dealer network. Available in S, SE, Luxury, F Sport, and Premier specifications, it offers something for every buyer seeking a premium SUV without the drama. The F Sport variant adds sportier styling and adaptive suspension for those wanting a more dynamic feel, whilst the Premier model tops the range with semi-aniline leather and a 15-speaker Mark Levinson audio system. Running costs are reasonable for the class, with insurance groups ranging from 41 to 43 for hybrids, though the earlier RX 200t petrol option offers lower purchase prices but significantly worse fuel economy.
Best for: Buyers seeking a comfortable, reliable, and fuel-efficient luxury SUV; those valuing dealer service and peace of mind; families needing seven seats (RX L); and those prioritising refinement over driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting the sharpest handling in the class; those seeking plug-in hybrid or fully electric options; or buyers with limited boot space requirements.

The Verdict
You should buy the RX 450h if: You seek a comfortable, reliable, and fuel-efficient luxury SUV; you value dealer service and peace of mind; you need seven seats (RX L); or you prioritise refinement over driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You want the sharpest handling in the class, seek plug-in hybrid or fully electric options, or require maximum boot space.
Competitive Position: The Lexus RX 450h is a strong contender in the premium large SUV market, offering exceptional reliability, comfort, and fuel efficiency. Whilst the BMW X5 and Audi Q7 deliver more dynamic handling and higher expert ratings, the RX 450h's superior user rating (5.0/5) reflects its appeal to buyers prioritising refinement and dependability. The RX 450h represents excellent value for those seeking a thoroughly refined ownership experience, backed by Lexus's renowned customer service. Its hybrid powertrain remains competitive, and the option of a seven-seat RX L fills a practical gap in the premium SUV segment.

5 Overall rating
(7 reviews)It’s an excellent car and has many features that you seldom find in the market at that price.
This is my dream car and the best hybrid as it is self charging hybrid from Toyota.I strongly recommend this brand Lexus to all drivers 👍
The car is superbly appointed and built. The main issue is to do with the relatively small mileage you get on battery power, and the motorway mpg is not great. However, it is a fantastic car.
Superb styling. Great performance. Economical. Powerful. Comfortable. Luxury extras
Fantastic quality if a little overpriced. Only car to buy
