A driver's car with excellent all round handling. It doesn't have much storage space but that is not what it's designed for - and I knew that when I bought it. Luckily my wife has a Defender 90.

Fun days out in a car that was initially stripped back to the essentials. Later models come with some toys but it retains the ability to make you smile.

Mazda MX-5 (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Irresistibly fun to drive | A bit cramped for tall drivers |
| Extremely reliable | Early cars have less safety kit than later models |
| Affordable to buy and run for a sports car | The boot is small |
Quick Summary
The Mazda MX-5 mk4 (2015-present) is the world's best-selling roadster, combining lightweight engineering with engaging driving dynamics. Weighing just 1,075kg and measuring roughly the same as the original 1996 model, it defies modern trends of ever-larger cars. The two-seater cabin is stylish and well-made, though tight on space—particularly for those over six feet tall. The 130-litre boot is modest, but the MX-5 prioritises driving experience over practicality. Available with a 1.5-litre engine producing 129bhp or a 2.0-litre unit offering up to 181bhp, both deliver smooth, eager performance with a slick six-speed manual gearbox. The manually operated soft-top roof is easy to operate, and the car's crisp steering and agile chassis make it entertaining at any speed.
Running costs are impressively low for a sports car, with real-world fuel economy exceeding 40mpg even when driven enthusiastically. Road tax sits between £150 and £205 annually, whilst insurance groups range from 25 to 32. Servicing costs are reasonable, with standard services under £240 at Mazda dealers, and independent specialists often charging £150 to £350. The MX-5 mk4 is reliable and cheap to run, making it an accessible sports car that delivers genuine thrills without demanding expert driving skills or deep pockets. Later models (2018 onwards) feature enhanced safety equipment including Front and Rear Smart City Brake Support and Lane Departure Warning.
Best for: Enthusiast drivers seeking affordable sports car thrills, those wanting reliable daily-use performance, and buyers who value engaging driving dynamics over practicality.
Not ideal for: Tall drivers needing spacious cabins, those requiring substantial boot space, or buyers prioritising safety equipment on earlier model years.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda MX-5 | 5/5 | 4.7/5 | 31.6% | 4.3/5 |

| Mazda MX-5 Mk3 | 5/5 | 4.7/5 | 31.6% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the MX-5 if: You're an enthusiast driver seeking affordable sports car thrills, wanting reliable daily-use performance, or prioritising engaging driving dynamics over practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You are tall and need a spacious cabin, require substantial boot space, or want maximum safety equipment on earlier model years.
Competitive Position: The Mazda MX-5 (2015-present) stands as the superior choice amongst convertible roadsters, offering the highest expert rating (5/5) and exceptional value for money. Whilst the MINI Convertible matches its user rating and the Fiat 500 offers slightly better deal availability, the MX-5 excels in reliability, running costs, and driving engagement. It delivers genuine sports car thrills without the premium pricing of rivals, making it the most rewarding choice for enthusiasts seeking an affordable, dependable convertible that's equally entertaining at low speeds and high ones. The mk4 also outperforms its predecessor, the mk3, with more modern safety features and improved efficiency.
