Mercedes-Benz GLE Class (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Luxurious cabin | Not as sporty as a BMW X5 |
| Models with air suspension are supremely comfortable | A Land Rover Discovery is roomier |
| The plug-in hybrid is tax-efficient for company car drivers | Mercedes performs poorly in reliability surveys |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz GLE Class (2018-present) is a large, premium SUV that sits above the GLC but below the GLS in Mercedes' lineup. Available as a conventional seven-seat SUV or as the sportier GLE Coupe, it competes directly with the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and Land Rover Discovery. The GLE prioritises comfort and luxury over sportiness, featuring a beautifully designed interior with premium materials and a range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains to suit different needs.
Space is abundant, with excellent boot capacity of up to 630 litres in five-seat models, though the third row is best suited for children. The air suspension models deliver supreme comfort on long journeys, whilst the plug-in hybrid 350de offers up to 66 miles of electric-only range and potential fuel savings. Running costs vary by model, with diesel engines offering better efficiency than petrols, and insurance premiums starting at group 44. The GLE excels at providing a refined, luxurious cruising experience with a wide range of models to choose from, making it an excellent choice for those prioritising comfort and occasion over sportiness.
Best for: Buyers seeking a large, premium SUV with luxurious comfort, families needing spacious seating, and company car drivers interested in the tax-efficient plug-in hybrid model.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising sporty handling like the BMW X5, maximum interior space like the Land Rover Discovery, or buyers concerned about reliability ratings.

The Verdict
You should buy the GLE if: You're seeking a large, premium SUV with luxurious comfort, need spacious seating for a family, or are interested in the tax-efficient plug-in hybrid model for company car use.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sporty handling like the BMW X5, require maximum interior space like the Land Rover Discovery, or are concerned about reliability ratings.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz GLE Class (2018-present) is a strong contender in the premium large SUV market, excelling at providing refined luxury and comfort. Whilst the BMW X5 offers superior sportiness and the Land Rover Discovery provides more space, the GLE's beautifully appointed interior, supremely comfortable air suspension models, and tax-efficient plug-in hybrid option make it an excellent choice for those prioritising occasion and refinement. With a wide range of powertrains and trim levels, it appeals to a broad audience seeking a premium cruising experience.

4.8 Overall rating
(4 reviews)Reliable engines and over all performance, combined with a muscular looks, it’s best if f both worlds if you can get it the right price considering that how fast they depreciate, in my opinion it should not be more than 27k
Less features than my previous e class amg. Radio/cd sound quality poor. Less complete eg no compartments under the front seats, no surround under the rear seats. HOWEVER a brilliant large SUV. Compare to Range Rover.
It was smooth in driving just the seat was a bit uncomfortable
Really beautiful car power if the AMG 63 with the practical space of a 4x4 fantastic vehicle
