Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz SLC (2016-2020) is the renamed third-generation SLK, featuring a stylish folding metal hardtop that provides both security and a touch of glamour. This generation received only minor updates from its predecessor, including a new steering wheel and subtle styling tweaks. The SLC is available with 2.0-litre petrol engines in two outputs: the SLC 200 with 181bhp and the SLC 300 with 242bhp. Both offer decent performance but deliver a somewhat synthetic driving experience. The SLC 200 comes with a six-speed manual as standard, whilst the SLC 300 features a nine-speed automatic. Final Edition models include electric part-leather seats, metallic paint, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, and satnav as standard.
However, the SLC struggles with practicality and comfort. The interior is cramped, with limited rear legroom for taller drivers, and boot space is compromised when the roof is lowered. The driving experience is laid-back rather than engaging, with heavy steering and noticeable body lean through corners. Ride quality is poor at low speeds, with jolts and jitters across imperfect surfaces. Fuel economy ranges from 30-35mpg for the SLC 200 to around 25mpg for the AMG SLC 43, which is unimpressive for the class. Running costs are high, with expensive Mercedes servicing and no discounted menu pricing after three years. Reliability data is limited, though the older SLK scored poorly in surveys, and Mercedes-Benz's overall dependability reputation is middling at best.
Best for: Buyers seeking a glamorous convertible with a secure folding roof and those prioritising style over substance or driving engagement.
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting engaging handling, comfortable long-distance travel, practical boot space, or excellent value for money, and those seeking a reliable premium roadster.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz SLC | 2/5 | 4.7/5 | 30.4% | 3.8/5 |
| Audi TT Roadster | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.6% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW Z4 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 23.4% | 4.1/5 |
| Porsche 718 Boxster | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 26.3% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the SLC if: You prioritise style and glamour over driving engagement, value the security of a folding metal roof, and are willing to compromise on comfort and practicality for aesthetic appeal.
Consider alternatives if: You seek engaging handling, comfortable long-distance travel, excellent value for money, or superior reliability and running costs.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz SLC (2016-2020) occupies an awkward middle ground in the premium roadster market. Whilst it offers glamorous styling and a secure folding roof, it falls short of rivals in nearly every other respect. The Audi TT Roadster and BMW Z4 both score higher with experts and offer better value, whilst the Porsche 718 Boxster, though more expensive, delivers a vastly superior driving experience and reliability. The SLC's poor handling, uncomfortable ride, dated interior, and high running costs make it a questionable choice unless style is your sole priority. For most buyers, the Audi TT represents better value, whilst those willing to spend more will find the Porsche far more rewarding.

4.7 Overall rating
(3 reviews)More stylish than the Audi TT, better appointed than the BMW Z4, roomier than the MX5 In diesel form, still rapid and economical.
My overall impression of the SLC model that I bought, is totally stunning in evey wa.y. It has a plethora of very expensive extras. It is a fast luxurious, classy and elegant motor car.
Automatic roof makes it a winner technically dated poor sat nav
