Mercedes-Benz SLC (2016-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Folding metal roof adds security | Boot space reduces with the roof down |
| Glamorous looks | Dated and cramped interior |
| Boot is a reasonable size with the roof up | Not exciting to drive nor comfy to travel in |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz SLC (2016-2020) is a stylish compact roadster that evolved from the SLK, retaining its innovative folding hardtop and glamorous looks. While a minor facelift accompanied the name change, it remained largely similar to its predecessor. Despite its appealing exterior, the interior can feel cramped, particularly for taller drivers, and the boot's practicality is compromised when the roof is down. The infotainment system is dated, but features like the 'Airscarf' and standard satnav on Final Edition models add some modern convenience.
Driving the SLC is a distinctly laid-back experience; it's not designed for spirited cornering, with heavy steering and a tendency to lean. Comfort is also an issue, as it can feel unsettled on uneven roads. Engine options, primarily 2.0-litre petrols (181bhp and 242bhp), offer decent performance but lack an exciting engine note. Fuel economy is average (30-35mpg for the SLC 200), and servicing costs can be high. Reliability, based on the similar SLK, was below average in surveys, though it does hold its value well.
Best for: Drivers seeking glamorous looks, the security of a folding hardtop, or a car that holds its value well.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising engaging driving dynamics, ride comfort, spacious interiors, modern infotainment, or strong reliability.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz SLC | 2/5 | 4.0/5 | 35.1% | 3.8/5 |
| Audi TT Roadster | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 30.7% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW Z4 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 29.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Porsche 718 Boxster | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 42.5% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the SLC if: You're drawn to its glamorous looks, appreciate the security of a folding hardtop, or value a car that retains its worth well.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise an engaging driving experience, superior ride comfort, a more spacious interior, modern infotainment technology, or a stronger reliability record.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz SLC (2016-2020) offers a dose of Mercedes glamour with the practicality and security of a folding hardtop. While it holds its value well, it lags behind rivals like the Porsche 718 Boxster and Audi TT Roadster in terms of driving dynamics, comfort, and modern interior technology. Its laid-back nature and dated cabin may deter those seeking a more spirited or refined convertible experience, but its distinctive style and accessible pricing on the used market could still appeal to certain buyers.

4 Overall rating
(7 reviews)More stylish than the Audi TT, better appointed than the BMW Z4, roomier than the MX5 In diesel form, still rapid and economical.
My overall impression of the SLC model that I bought, is totally stunning in evey wa.y. It has a plethora of very expensive extras. It is a fast luxurious, classy and elegant motor car.
Automatic roof makes it a winner technically dated poor sat nav
This is a basic version of the car - no cruise, no electric seats etc that I’d expect of buying a car in this class so this distracts fr the feeling of luxury. The test drive route was lame and so I can’t really comment on the car’s performance much It pulled away easily, gear transition was smooth and responsive. I liked it enough to make arrangements to test drive in another area so I can put the car through its paces a bit more. I’m comparing it to the M420, Z4, TT and A5
no sat nav or parking sensors, found same car with the extras for same price
