Mitsubishi Outlander (2013-2021) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Pioneering plug-in hybrid promises low running costs for the right buyer | Dated infotainment and interior finish |
| Choice of five or seven seats if you don't buy the hybrid | Early PHEVs have a smaller battery than post-2019 cars |
| Plenty of room for passengers and their luggage | Dull to drive |
Quick Summary
The Mitsubishi Outlander (2013-2021) is an honest, workhorse SUV offering excellent practicality and space at a competitive price. Its standout feature is the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, which uniquely combined big-SUV versatility with very low CO2 emissions and pure electric running for 20-25 miles in real-world driving. The 2018 facelift brought a larger battery, improved materials, and a better infotainment system, making it feel closer to newer rivals. With masses of interior room, flexible seating options (including seven-seat layouts on non-hybrid models), and a spacious 463-litre boot on the PHEV, it's an exceptionally practical family SUV.
The PHEV remains the pick of the range, offering VED-free motoring and exemption from the London Congestion Charge until late 2021. However, rivals have now caught up with plug-in hybrid options, and they're only highlighting how dated the Outlander feels in terms of infotainment, interior finish, and driving dynamics. The diesel and non-hybrid petrol options face stiffer competition from more refined alternatives. As a used buy, the Outlander has real merit, particularly the PHEV for those who charge regularly, though fuel economy benefits diminish on long motorway journeys.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious, practical family SUV; company car drivers (PHEV); those wanting low running costs with regular charging; families needing flexible seating options.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling, premium interior quality, modern infotainment, or those covering large distances or frequent motorway miles without charging facilities.

| Mitsubishi Outlander | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.1% | 4.1/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Outlander if: You need a spacious, practical family SUV on a budget; you're a company car driver seeking low running costs; you want a pioneering plug-in hybrid with regular charging access; or you require flexible seating options.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging handling, premium interior quality, modern infotainment, or plan to cover large distances without regular charging opportunities.
Competitive Position: The Mitsubishi Outlander (2013-2021) remains a durable and practical SUV with genuine appeal as a used buy. Its plug-in hybrid was genuinely unique in the large budget SUV class for many years, offering low running costs for the right buyer. However, rivals have now caught up, and their superior driving dynamics, interior refinement, and modern infotainment systems only highlight how dated the Outlander feels. The Skoda Kodiaq and Hyundai Santa Fe offer better driving experiences, whilst the Nissan X-Trail provides comparable practicality. Nevertheless, for budget-conscious buyers seeking maximum space and the PHEV's low running costs with regular charging, the Outlander remains a convincing proposition.

(17 reviews)Customers say
The Mitsubishi Outlander is appreciated by owners for its spacious interior, hybrid efficiency, and overall reliability across multiple model years. Many drivers find the Outlander to be versatile, handling well in various conditions and offering ample cargo space. However, some concerns have been raised regarding its sporty driving experience and the potential for clutch issues in certain models. While the hybrid variants are favored for their eco-friendly features, the model line faces scrutiny for parts availability in some regions.

What people say
No thrills or gadgets or gizmos. Engine is solid and will last me a lifetime time if serviced yearly. Quick when it needs to be, towing capability is second to none for other cars in its price range.
Reliable and roomy family car, dog friendly and affordable excellent tow car.
A do everything car. This is our 4th Outlander and to date all have been 100% reliable. Just a brilliant vehicle.
Wonderful plug in hybrid if you work close to home you can drive on electric saving money and it’s still one of a few hybrids you can tow with
What a car!!! All the comforts a driver needs plenty room in the back and the boot. The hybrid system works a treat and I can go to work and back on a full charge so it costs me literally nothing in fuel.
