Mitsubishi Shogun (2006-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Rugged and tough off road | Clumsy and noisy on the road |
| Five-door versions are roomy and practical | Thirsty engine and high emissions |
| Well proven mechanical components | Outclassed in most respects by more modern designs |
Quick Summary
The Mitsubishi Shogun (2006-2019) is a traditional body-on-frame off-roader that remains closer to the original Japanese SUV ethos than many modern rivals. Available with three or five doors, and featuring a 3.2-litre turbodiesel engine with either manual or automatic transmission, the Shogun delivers genuine off-road capability with multiple four-wheel-drive modes. The five-door model offers seven seats and a cavernous 663-litre boot in five-seat configuration, making it exceptionally practical for families and those requiring serious towing capacity of up to 3,500kg.
However, the Shogun is fundamentally an off-roader first and a road car second. The cabin is roomy but dated, with durable rather than plush materials, and on-road performance is heavy and clumsy compared with more modern SUVs. The 3.2-litre diesel is gruff and thirsty, returning mid-20s to low-30s mpg depending on specification and driving conditions. Despite these shortcomings, the Shogun represents excellent value for money without a prestige badge, offering substantial size and equipment at an affordable price. Well-proven mechanical components and the availability of specialist servicing add to its appeal for those who genuinely need an off-roader rather than simply want one.
Best for: Off-road enthusiasts, farmers, those requiring serious towing capacity, and buyers seeking a rugged, practical vehicle without premium badge costs.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising on-road comfort and refinement, those concerned about fuel economy and emissions, or buyers wanting a modern, plush SUV experience.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mitsubishi Shogun | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 22.0% | 3.9/5 |

| Kia Sorento | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.9% | 4.3/5 |
| Toyota Land Cruiser | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 21.6% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Shogun if: You need a genuine off-roader, require serious towing capacity, seek a rugged and practical vehicle, or want substantial size and equipment without premium badge costs.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise on-road comfort and refinement, are concerned about fuel economy and emissions, or desire a modern, plush SUV experience.
Competitive Position: The Mitsubishi Shogun (2006-2019) occupies a unique position in the used SUV market as a traditional, no-nonsense off-roader. Whilst the Land Rover Discovery and Kia Sorento offer superior on-road refinement and more modern design, the Shogun excels in genuine off-road capability and value for money. Like the Toyota Land Cruiser, it prioritises off-road prowess over road-going comfort, but at a more affordable price point. For buyers who genuinely need an off-roader rather than simply want one, the Shogun's rugged construction, proven mechanical components, and practical five-door layout make it an excellent choice, despite its dated cabin and thirsty engine.

(12 reviews)This car is well specd, solidly designed /well built, but really good ones can be expensive
Simply a great car. Brilliant to drive, comfotable with great safety and luxury features. A really solid performer!
This is the eighth Shogun I have owned and found them very easy to drive, very comfortable and reliable. Both my wife and I are disabled and find them easy to get in and out with plenty of room in the back for my wifes disability buggy. I have owned other 4x4s but always go back to a Shogun.
Excellent car alround, with mitsubishi reliability built in, generally classed as being old school nowadays, unfortunately so in my opinion, Snapped up immediately as soon as advertised which tends to prove my point
Overpriced by £6000-6500 & only with part SH and manual
