It was an excellent example of the model. Great body work and interior with lots of extras and very low mileage. Sharper than a BMW Z4 and better looking than an Audi TT.

Porsche Boxster 718 (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exceptionally enjoyable to drive | Four-cylinder engines sound bland |
| Practical enough to use every day | Tyres and brakes will be expensive to replace |
| Roof-down thrills without compromising the driving experience | Lacks the rear seats of a 911 |
Quick Summary
The Porsche Boxster 718 (2016-present) is an exceptionally engaging mid-engined two-seater roadster that delivers genuine sports car thrills with surprising practicality. The mid-engined, rear-wheel drive layout provides a perfectly balanced chassis that steers beautifully and rewards spirited driving. Despite the controversial switch to turbocharged four-cylinder engines, the 718 Boxster remains a near-peerless roadster with an exquisite driving experience. The electrically powered roof raises and lowers in nine seconds, whilst the combined 280-litre luggage capacity (130-litre frunk and 150-litre boot) rivals most superminis, making it genuinely usable for daily commuting and longer journeys.
The 2019 refresh introduced the naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six GTS 4.0, delivering muscular performance and a spine-tingling soundtrack for those willing to stretch their budget. Servicing at an Official Porsche Centre costs around £500-£650 per service, though independent specialists offer savings once warranty expires. Whilst running costs are higher than mainstream sports cars—with tyres costing up to £800 and brake replacements around £1,500—most versions achieve respectable fuel economy of 30mpg. The Boxster's comfortable driving position, decent visibility, and light controls make it easy to live with daily, though tyre roar on coarse surfaces can be noticeable.
Best for: Enthusiasts seeking an engaging, daily-usable sports car with roof-down thrills, those who appreciate mid-engined balance and Porsche engineering, and buyers willing to invest in premium running costs for exceptional driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Purists who cannot accept the four-cylinder engine's sound, budget-conscious buyers concerned about expensive maintenance and replacement parts, or those requiring rear seats for occasional passengers.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Porsche Boxster 718 | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 30.8% | 4.3/5 |
| Audi TT Mk3 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 29.2% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW Z4 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 24.5% | 4.1/5 |
| Jaguar F-Type | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 30.9% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Boxster 718 if: You're seeking an exceptionally engaging sports car with genuine daily usability, appreciate mid-engined balance and Porsche engineering, or want roof-down thrills without compromising driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You cannot accept the four-cylinder engine's sound, are concerned about expensive maintenance and replacement parts, or require rear seats for occasional passengers.
Competitive Position: The Porsche Boxster 718 stands as the most accomplished roadster in its class, delivering superior driving dynamics and chassis balance compared to rivals like the BMW Z4, Audi TT, and Jaguar F-Type. Whilst the Jaguar F-Type matches it for user satisfaction and the Audi TT offers similar overall ratings, the Boxster's mid-engined layout and exquisite handling make it the driver's choice. Its higher expert rating reflects its exceptional engineering and driving experience. However, prospective buyers must accept higher running costs and the divisive four-cylinder engine sound as trade-offs for this level of performance and engagement.
