A superb drive holds to the road like glue and sounds fantastic. Soft top is cool and the PDK transmission is brilliant.

A 22 year young classic Porsche convertible 3.2 S. Custom built. The only bright red Porsche Convertible in this area. Makes other people smile uncontrollably when I let them drive it with the roof down in the sunshine.

Quick Summary
The Porsche Boxster 986 is Porsche's entry-level sports car—a two-seat, mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive convertible powered by a classic flat-six engine. Known as the 986 after its development code, this first-generation model made owning a Porsche far more accessible than ever before. Today, it remains one of the most affordable Porsches to buy second-hand, offering exceptional value for those seeking a modern classic with serious driving credentials. The Boxster delivers one of the finest driving experiences of the 1990s, with crisp steering, a beautifully balanced chassis, and a rasping engine that provides genuine thrills.
Practicality is surprisingly good for a two-seater sports car, with dual boots offering sufficient space for weekend luggage or shopping. The cockpit provides adequate room for most occupants, though storage inside is limited on pre-2003 models lacking a glove compartment. Running costs require careful consideration: fuel economy sits mid-table among contemporary roadsters at around 25mpg, but maintenance costs can be steep due to Porsche servicing expenses and specialist knowledge required. However, the timing chain—rather than a rubber belt—should last the car's lifetime, offsetting some costs. Finding a well-maintained example with a full service history is essential, as neglected Boxsters can become expensive liabilities.
Best for: Driving enthusiasts seeking an affordable Porsche, those who value handling and performance, and buyers willing to invest in proper maintenance for a modern classic.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers prioritising low running costs, those sensitive to controversial styling, or those unwilling to commit to regular specialist servicing.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Porsche Boxster | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 8.4% | 4.1/5 |

| Nissan 370Z | 3/5 | 4.9/5 | 45.0% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Boxster if: You're a driving enthusiast seeking an affordable Porsche, value handling and performance above all else, and are willing to invest in proper maintenance for a modern classic.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise low running costs, are sensitive to controversial styling, or are unwilling to commit to regular specialist servicing.
Competitive Position: The Porsche Boxster 986 stands out as a genuinely exhilarating driver's car that delivers serious performance at an accessible price point. Whilst the TVR Chimaera offers raw drama and the Nissan 370Z provides better value for money, neither matches the Boxster's refinement, reliability, or prestige. The Boxster's main drawback—potentially expensive maintenance—is offset by its superior build quality, timeless design, and the unmatched appeal of owning a Porsche. For those willing to seek out a well-maintained example and budget for specialist servicing, the 986 Boxster represents an exceptional opportunity to own a modern classic that delivers genuine driving pleasure and lasting satisfaction.
