Porsche Boxster 986 (1997-2005) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exquisite to drive | Love-or-loathe looks |
| Plenty available | Patchy build quality |
| Stylish interior | Some expensive potential problems |
Quick Summary
The Porsche Boxster 986 (1997-2005) is Porsche's entry-level sports car and one of the most affordable ways to own a Porsche badge. This two-seat, mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive convertible features a classic flat-six engine that keeps the centre of gravity low, delivering exquisite driving dynamics. The first-generation Boxster remains one of the best performance-car bargains available, with crisp steering, a beautifully balanced chassis, and a rasping engine that carves through corners with exemplary precision. Surprisingly practical for a two-seater, it offers two boots for luggage and weekend trips, though storage inside is limited on pre-2003 models without a glove compartment.
Running costs present the main consideration. Whilst fuel economy sits mid-table amongst contemporary roadsters at around 25mpg, Porsche servicing and parts are expensive, making a well-maintained example with a full service history essential. However, the timing chain design means no costly belt replacements. Early models lacked standard equipment like leather seats, air-conditioning, and traction control, though these improved over time. Build quality is patchy in places, with some cheap-feeling switchgear, but the dashboard remains stylish. With careful purchasing and pre-emptive maintenance, the 986 Boxster delivers serious driving pleasure and modern classic status on a relatively modest budget.
Best for: Driving enthusiasts seeking affordable Porsche ownership, those who prioritise handling and driving dynamics, and buyers with the budget for specialist maintenance and repairs.
Not ideal for: Those seeking low running costs, buyers unwilling to invest in proper maintenance, or those requiring four seats and practical family transport.

The Verdict
You should buy the Boxster if: You're a driving enthusiast seeking affordable Porsche ownership, prioritise handling and driving dynamics, and have the budget for specialist maintenance and repairs.
Consider alternatives if: You're seeking low running costs, unwilling to invest in proper maintenance, or require four seats and practical family transport.
Competitive Position: The Porsche Boxster 986 (1997-2005) stands out amongst contemporary roadsters for its exquisite driving experience and stylish design. Whilst rivals like the BMW Z3/Z4 offer comparable overall ratings and the Nissan 370Z provides better value for money, the Boxster delivers superior driving dynamics and the prestige of Porsche ownership. However, potential buyers must accept higher maintenance costs and the importance of finding a well-maintained example. For those willing to invest in proper care, the 986 Boxster represents a modern classic that delivers serious driving pleasure and genuine badge cachet on a relatively modest budget.

(7 reviews)Pure magic! A super car that is too amazing to be true!
What a great car, the power ratio is insane and handles really well
A superb drive holds to the road like glue and sounds fantastic. Soft top is cool and the PDK transmission is brilliant.
A 22 year young classic Porsche convertible 3.2 S. Custom built. The only bright red Porsche Convertible in this area. Makes other people smile uncontrollably when I let them drive it with the roof down in the sunshine.
Great car, handles well, comfortable, sounds awesome & can really shift
