Renault Grand Scenic (2016-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Low running costs | Not as adventurous-looking as SUV rivals |
| Better packaging than an equivalent SUV | Third-row space not the biggest |
| Eye-catching looks for an MPV | Storage better in previous Scenics |
Quick Summary
The 2016-2020 Renault Grand Scenic arrived when MPVs were losing ground to SUVs, yet it attempted to infuse SUV-like style into its people-carrier design. Despite handsome styling, it faced slow sales. As a used car, it offers excellent value due to lower depreciation compared to fashionable SUVs. The Grand Scenic provides a light and airy cabin with seven seats, comfortable front and middle rows, and excellent cabin storage. However, the third row has limited head- and legroom, making it better suited as a 5+2 seater, and the shift to a 60/40 split middle bench reduces flexibility compared to its predecessor.
Driving the Grand Scenic is unexciting, with notable body lean, numb steering, and a firm low-speed ride, typical for an MPV. A range of petrol and diesel engines were available, including an early mild-hybrid diesel, all proving fit for purpose. Most models feature the R-Link2 touchscreen infotainment system, with higher trims getting an 8.7-inch portrait screen and a head-up display, though the system can be complicated. Running costs are low, especially for diesel variants, with the Hybrid Assist achieving around 60mpg. Insurance premiums are also very affordable, making it an economical choice overall.
Best for: Drivers on a budget, families needing space and practicality, and those looking for low running costs.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising driving dynamics, spacious third-row seating, cutting-edge infotainment usability, or premium interior materials.

The Verdict
You should buy the Grand Scenic if: You're on a budget, seeking a practical family car, or looking for low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise driving dynamics, spacious third-row seating, cutting-edge infotainment usability, or premium interior materials.
Competitive Position: The Renault Grand Scenic (2016-2020) offers excellent value as a used car, with low running costs and practical seven-seat (5+2) packaging, making it an affordable family option. While it doesn't offer exciting driving dynamics or the largest third-row space compared to some rivals, its handsome styling, good equipment levels, and strong safety features present a compelling alternative to more fashionable SUVs and other MPVs for budget-conscious buyers.
