Renault Megane (2016-2022) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Impressively comfortable ride	Doesn't excel in any one area
Punchy, efficient engines	Questionable reliability record
Effective plug-in version	Infotainment awkward to use

Quick Summary

The Renault Megane (2016-2022) is a stylish French family hatchback that offers a comfortable ride and punchy, efficient engines. With its big LED running lights and near-full-width tail light clusters, it presents an attractive exterior, whilst the interior features robust materials and intuitive design. Rear seat space is adequate, though not class-leading, and boot capacity is fairly generous. The Megane drives in a relaxed manner, feeling stable and secure on flowing roads, and its soft suspension delivers a smooth, quiet ride that makes it an excellent motorway cruiser. An estate version is available for those requiring additional practicality.

The Megane range includes the renowned Renaultsport (RS) variants, which remain terrific hot hatches despite no longer being the segment leaders. Available in standard, Trophy, and extreme Trophy-R forms, these performance versions offer genuine driving excitement. Petrol engines deliver around 40-45mpg, whilst diesel variants achieve approximately 55mpg. The plug-in hybrid E-Tech offers low CO2 emissions, making it particularly attractive as a company car. However, the Megane suffers from significant depreciation and a questionable reliability record, with the diesel requiring a timing belt change every six years or 90,000 miles. The infotainment system, whilst visually appealing, can be fiddly to operate.

Best for: Buyers seeking a comfortable, stylish family hatchback with efficient engines, those considering a company car (especially the plug-in hybrid), and enthusiasts interested in an affordable performance option (RS variants).

Not ideal for: Those prioritising driving dynamics, maximum interior space, excellent reliability, or strong residual values, or buyers who value straightforward infotainment systems.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Megane if: You prioritise comfort and a relaxed driving experience, seek an efficient family hatchback, are considering a company car (particularly the plug-in hybrid), or want an affordable performance option with the RS variants.

Consider alternatives if: You value superior driving dynamics, maximum interior space, excellent reliability, strong residual values, or prefer straightforward infotainment systems.

Competitive Position: The Renault Megane (2016-2022) is a pleasant, well-equipped family hatchback that offers genuine comfort and efficiency. However, it struggles to excel in any particular area, making it less compelling than its rivals. The Ford Focus delivers superior driving dynamics, the Volkswagen Golf offers premium appeal and better residuals, and the Vauxhall Astra provides comparable value. Most significantly, the Megane's heavy depreciation and questionable reliability record make it less cost-effective to own than competitors, despite its attractive initial pricing and generous equipment levels. The plug-in hybrid variant makes more sense as a company car, but for private buyers seeking a modern, dependable family hatchback, alternatives offer better overall value and peace of mind.
