No engine with a “billion” moving parts, no transmission, no extras such as turbo chargers or intricate air intake systems just highly reliable electric motors means very little need for maintenance. Brakes last years and years because there is no need to use them much. A full tank costs a fraction of a fill up at the local pump. The included high tech is second to none. Software updates keep up with Jones and resolve what can be major issues with other cars.

Tesla Model S (2014-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Mind-bending acceleration | The interior could be better finished |
| Excellent range and charging network | Some question marks over reliability |
| Very well equipped | More recent Tesla models are cheaper to buy new |
Quick Summary
The Tesla Model S (2014-present) is a groundbreaking all-electric saloon that revolutionised the automotive industry. It combines impressive performance with a genuinely long driving range, offering comfort and advanced technology that rivals premium petrol and diesel alternatives. Even in basic rear-wheel-drive form, it accelerates from 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds, whilst higher-specification models achieve this in just 4.2 seconds. The minimalist interior is spacious for four adults, with an enormous 709-litre boot and an additional 89-litre frunk, providing exceptional practicality. With fold-flat rear seats, total luggage capacity reaches 1,739 litres, and Tesla even offers optional fold-out seats to accommodate seven passengers, though these are cramped for regular use.
Running costs are significantly lower than conventional vehicles, with no fuel expenses, zero VED charges, and minimal servicing requirements. Tesla quotes that charging for 1,000 miles costs approximately £72, compared to £284 for a high-performance petrol car averaging 21mpg. The Model S benefits from an extensive Supercharger network, making long-distance travel viable. However, potential buyers should be aware that the interior finish could be improved, there are some reliability concerns, and newer Tesla models offer better value when purchased new. Insurance costs are high due to the vehicle's classification in the highest group, though this is typical for powerful electric vehicles.
Best for: Drivers seeking an electric car with serious performance, excellent range, and advanced technology; those who travel long distances and want access to a reliable charging network; and buyers prioritising low running costs.
Not ideal for: Those seeking a premium interior finish, buyers concerned about reliability and support, or those looking for the most cost-effective new electric vehicle option.

The Verdict
You should buy the Model S if: You're seeking an electric car with serious performance and excellent range, you travel long distances regularly, or you prioritise low running costs and advanced technology.
Consider alternatives if: You require a premium interior finish, you're concerned about reliability and support, or you want the most cost-effective new electric vehicle option.
Competitive Position: The Tesla Model S remains a compelling choice in the premium electric saloon market. Whilst the Porsche Taycan offers a more engaging driving experience and potentially better reliability, and the Jaguar I-Pace provides excellent user satisfaction, the Model S's combination of mind-bending acceleration, exceptional range, and comprehensive Supercharger network make it a strong contender. Its comparatively accessible pricing and proven track record further enhance its appeal for buyers seeking a practical, high-performance electric saloon that can handle long-distance travel with confidence.
