Toyota Aygo (2014-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent reliability, as you'd expect of a Toyota | Noisy on the motorway |
| Very economical to fuel and inexpensive to run | So-so Euro NCAP safety rating |
| Easy to drive and park | Small boot, even for a city car |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Aygo (2014-2022) is a compact, efficient, and reliable city car that competes with the Fiat 500, Volkswagen Up, and Skoda Citigo. This second-generation model retained the strengths of its predecessor, including its compact footprint and low running costs, whilst adding more playful exterior styling and modern features. It shares its underpinnings with the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108. Available in three-door and five-door versions (later five-door only), the Aygo offers decent front space but cramped rear seating as a strict four-seater. The 168-litre boot is small and difficult to access, though the interior is straightforward and well laid out with optional colour-coded inserts adding appeal.
Powered by a single 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine producing 68bhp (later 71bhp), the Aygo accelerates from 0-62mph in around 14 seconds with a top speed of 99mph. It averages more than 60mpg claimed, easily returning over 50mpg in real-world driving. An automated manual transmission is available, though the manual remains more popular with its light clutch and easy shift action. Around town, the Aygo is extremely easy to drive and manoeuvre, comfortable, and handles small bumps well. However, at higher speeds it struggles; the engine works hard and becomes noisy and strained. Running costs are exceptionally low, with no VED on pre-April 2017 models, inexpensive servicing around £145, and small replacement tyres at approximately £60 per corner. The petrol engine uses a timing chain, avoiding substantial future bills. Insurance groups sit at six to nine, in line with most rivals.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a small, efficient city car with outstanding reliability and low running costs, new drivers, and those prioritising practicality in urban environments.
Not ideal for: Drivers undertaking frequent motorway journeys, those requiring a larger boot, or buyers seeking premium badge appeal or superior driving dynamics.

The Verdict
You should buy the Aygo if: You're seeking a small, efficient city car with outstanding reliability and low running costs, you're a new driver, or you prioritise practicality in urban environments.
Consider alternatives if: You undertake frequent motorway journeys, require a larger boot, or seek premium badge appeal or superior driving dynamics.
Competitive Position: The Toyota Aygo (2014-2022) is a strong contender in the city car market, offering exceptional reliability, outstanding fuel economy, and very low running costs. Whilst it may not match rivals like the Volkswagen Up for premium feel or the Hyundai i10 for expert rating, its Toyota reliability, affordability, and ease of use make it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers and new drivers. The optional Funroof adds retro appeal and fun, whilst the seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with reversing camera provides modern convenience. For those prioritising dependability and low ownership costs over motorway comfort, the Aygo represents outstanding value.
