Toyota Land Cruiser (2009-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| No-nonsense 4x4 with serious off-road ability | Costly to fuel, especially cars made before the 2020 update |
| Reliability the likes of which Land Rover owners can only dream of | Clumsy and unsophisticated to drive on the road |
| Top-spec models are very well equipped | The Invincible spec model is expensive |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Land Cruiser (2009-2023) is a no-nonsense, body-on-frame 4x4 with a formidable reputation for reliability and off-road capability. This generation arrived in Britain in 2009 and was replaced in 2024, offering seven seats with comfortable accommodation in the front two rows. The interior prioritises practicality over luxury, with spacious cabin design and impressive luggage capacity of up to 640 litres with the rear seats folded. Powered exclusively by diesel engines in the UK market, early 3.0-litre models are tough but crude, whilst the 2.8-litre engines introduced from 2015 offer improved performance and fuel economy.
On tarmac, the Land Cruiser feels ponderous and unwieldy, with vague steering and considerable body roll, making it less comfortable than rivals like the Land Rover Discovery or more sporty than the Audi Q5 and BMW X5. However, its true strength lies off-road, where electronic aids such as Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control demonstrate Toyota's engineering prowess. Running costs are significant, with fuel consumption typically around 30mpg for the 3.0-litre and better for the 2.8-litre, whilst insurance and tax bills reflect its size and emissions. Post-2020 updates have smoothed some rough edges, making it a durable choice for those prioritising reliability and off-road performance over on-road refinement.
Best for: Off-road enthusiasts, those valuing reliability above all else, and buyers seeking a tough, durable 4x4 for remote environments.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising on-road comfort and sophistication, those concerned with fuel economy, or buyers seeking a plush cabin experience comparable to premium rivals.

The Verdict
You should buy the Land Cruiser if: You're an off-road enthusiast, value reliability above all else, or seek a tough, durable 4x4 for remote environments.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise on-road comfort and sophistication, are concerned with fuel economy, or require a plush cabin experience comparable to premium rivals.
Competitive Position: The Toyota Land Cruiser (2009-2023) stands apart in the large 4x4 market through its uncompromising focus on reliability and off-road capability. Whilst the Land Rover Discovery offers greater on-road comfort and the Jeep Grand Cherokee delivers more refinement, the Land Cruiser's legendary durability and serious off-road credentials make it the choice for those venturing beyond tarmac. The Mitsubishi Shogun offers similar ruggedness but with fewer value deals available. For buyers willing to sacrifice on-road sophistication in favour of proven reliability and genuine off-road prowess, the Land Cruiser remains an excellent investment, particularly post-2020 models with improved engines and updated features.

4.6 Overall rating
(5 reviews)A good all round 4x4. Although it will mostly be used for dogs and horses, it is comfortable and economical enough to be a general family car. Looking forward to driving it and enjoying it!
Normal every day car that can take me from point a to point B. And in a good condition with very good engine and first body.
Bought for towing purposes, at which it is great and makes the drive feel safe and comfortable. A large vehicle, but with good vision from it. As it is a towing vehicle it is just a pity that the boot door opens sideways rather than upwards as the door then hits the trailer behind the car.
very reliable, dependable and cost effective. it can never win races but it will definitely take you wherever you want to go. love this vehicle!!
The Vehicle Appearance seemed very good but the Price & Mileage were to High.
