Exhaust was blown, oil was leaking from the engine and the steering column would have to be lined up a certain way to even turn the key. Not as described at all.

Just bought my fifth Zafira in 20 years! Love the view above most cars while driving and the easy access - no stooping. And the flexibility of the seating 2,3,4,5,6 or7 seats

Vauxhall Zafira (2005-2014) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lots of car for not much money | Reliability is a serious concern |
| Performance models are surprisingly good fun | Disappointing interior quality |
| Space for up to seven with clever and flexible seating | The Zafira Tourer is a better car, if you can stretch your budget |
Quick Summary
The Vauxhall Zafira (2005-2014), the second generation, is an affordable seven-seater compact MPV based on the Astra platform. Stretched upwards and outwards with an extra row of seats, it offers impressive space for passengers, particularly in the middle row. The clever Flex7 independent seven-seat system allows flexible customisation, with 645 litres of boot space with the third row folded and a generous 1,820 litres with all rear seats flat. A 2008 facelift brought minor visual tweaks and enhanced safety features.
The Zafira prioritises comfort over driving excitement, offering a firm but comfortable ride suitable for long journeys. Engine options include 1.6, 1.8, 2.0-litre turbo, and 2.2-litre petrols, plus 1.9-litre and 1.7-litre CDTi diesels. The post-2007 1.6-litre petrol is recommended for its balance of efficiency and practicality. A sporty VXR variant provides an exciting alternative. Running costs are low, with affordable servicing at independent garages. However, reliability is a significant concern, and prospective buyers should have any purchase inspected by a trusted mechanic before purchase.
Best for: Budget-conscious families needing seven seats, those seeking practical and flexible seating arrangements, and buyers interested in the quirky VXR performance variant.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising reliability and interior quality, or buyers seeking a more refined driving experience comparable to the Ford S-Max.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vauxhall Zafira | 2/5 | 4.1/5 | 30.2% | 4.0/5 |
| Ford Fiesta Mk7 | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 37.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Vauxhall Corsa | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 38.5% | 4.3/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Zafira if: You're on a tight budget, need seven seats with flexible seating, or are seeking an affordable family MPV with practical versatility.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise reliability and interior quality, or require a more refined driving experience and better build standards.
Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Zafira (2005-2014) offers exceptional value as a seven-seater, providing more space and practicality than smaller rivals like the Ford Fiesta or Vauxhall Corsa. However, its expert rating of 2 out of 5 reflects significant reliability concerns that set it apart from competitors. Whilst user ratings remain respectable at 4.1 out of 5, potential buyers must prioritise pre-purchase inspections. For those willing to invest time in finding a well-maintained example, the Zafira represents outstanding value, though the Hyundai i20 and Ford Fiesta offer superior reliability and driving dynamics at potentially similar prices.
