Always VW. They may be over-priced, but there's a good reason for that - build quality and longevity.

Good practical vehicle and reliable. The suspension could do with being more refined.

Great van but on checking battery mileage 80/90 miles not practical fog any distance driving . I would only pay 8 thousand at most.

This is my first van and my first review. Overall very good deal and a great van. Havent had to do much to start converting it to a camper and the van is stacked with extra bits not advertised. Very happy with my purchase.

Volkswagen Transporter T6 (2016-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Variety of van, MPV and campervan models to choose from | Exhaust gas recirculation problems with BiTDi engine |
| Beautifully made interior | More expensive to buy than most rivals |
| Comfortable ride | Can't match the outright capacity of a Ford Transit Custom |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Transporter T6 (2016-2024) is a sophisticated and versatile van that transcends the typical workaday image. With its desirable badge, smart exterior styling, and beautifully built interior featuring robust plastics and ample storage, it offers a premium feel rarely found in the van market. The sixth-generation Transporter excels in practicality with multiple body shapes, wheelbase options, and roof heights to suit specific needs. Available as a cargo van, the Caravelle passenger carrier with up to eight seats, or the utilitarian Shuttle, it provides flexibility for various applications. The wide-opening sliding side door and rear doors that open to 250 degrees facilitate easy loading and unloading.
The T6 delivers composed, car-like handling and one of the most comfortable suspension setups available in any van, making it ideal for those covering vast distances. Engine options include 2.0-litre diesel units ranging from 83bhp to 178bhp, plus 2.0-litre petrol engines with up to 201bhp, paired with manual or DSG automatic transmissions. The 2019 facelift introduced the T6.1 with improved infotainment, electromechanical power steering, and advanced safety features including Crosswind Assist, lane-keeping assist, and Trailer Assist. Fuel economy ranges from around 35mpg for smaller engines to below 30mpg for more powerful variants. Whilst more expensive than rivals, the Transporter's quality, comfort, and extensive customisation options justify the premium for discerning buyers.
Best for: Small business owners seeking a statement of class and quality, those requiring passenger or cargo versatility, and buyers prioritising comfort and build quality over outright capacity.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious purchasers, those needing maximum load capacity, or buyers seeking the lowest running costs in the segment.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Transporter | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 34.3% | 4.4/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz Vito | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 30.8% | 4.3/5 |
| Ford Transit Custom | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 35.3% | 4.4/5 |
| Vauxhall Vivaro | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 38.4% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Transporter if: You're a small business owner seeking a statement of class and quality, require passenger or cargo versatility, or prioritise comfort and build quality over outright capacity.
Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious, need maximum load capacity, or require the lowest running costs in the segment.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Transporter T6 occupies a premium position in the mid-size van market, offering sophistication and versatility that rivals struggle to match. Whilst the Ford Transit Custom provides greater outright capacity and the Vauxhall Vivaro offers better value, the Transporter's beautifully built interior, comfortable ride, and extensive customisation options justify its higher price point. The Mercedes-Benz Vito matches it for premium feel but at similar cost. For discerning buyers who view their van as both a practical tool and a statement of quality, the Transporter remains hard to beat.
