Customers say
The Volvo XC60 has garnered a strong reputation across its model years for its quality build, comfort, and performance. Many owners appreciate its generous interior space and safety features, often comparing it favorably against competitors like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Drivers particularly enjoy the economical fuel efficiency and well-equipped interiors, although some do express concerns about the high maintenance costs and the vehicle’s price relative to others in its class. Overall, the XC60 is seen as a stylish and practical choice for those seeking a luxury SUV experience.

It's a good workhorse and a good luxury car that is brilliant for a family. The AWD was important to get around in bad weather

The XC60 is a wonderful car for touring and the longer distances. The seats are very comfortable and you get a god all round view of other road users. The 2.4 engine is flexible and will give around 40-45 MPG; the 2.0 litre is much more economical and has a lower road tax.

Volvo XC60 (2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Looks classy both inside and out | No seven-seat option |
| Efficient petrol and plug-in hybrid engines | Not exciting to drive |
| A very practical family vehicle | Pricier than many similarly sized SUVs |
Quick Summary
The Volvo XC60 is a premium mid-size SUV that has repositioned Volvo as a luxury brand capable of competing with Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The second-generation model, launched in 2017 and updated for 2025, features a clean, minimalist Scandinavian interior with high-quality materials and soft-touch surfaces. The 2025 facelift introduces a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen with faster software, revised exterior styling and improved sound insulation, reinforcing its premium credentials. With 483 litres of boot space (468 in plug-in hybrid versions) and a 60:40 split rear seat, it offers practical family transport, though it lacks the seven-seat flexibility of some rivals.
The XC60 excels in ride comfort and refinement, particularly on motorways where wind and tyre noise are impressively low. The engine line-up has been simplified, with diesel options dropped in favour of a 2.0-litre petrol engine with electrification across all variants. The B5 mild-hybrid produces 247bhp with real-world fuel economy around 35mpg, whilst the T6 and T8 plug-in hybrids offer 346bhp and 451bhp respectively, with the T8 achieving 62mph in 4.9 seconds. Servicing costs are competitive with the Audi Q5 and lower than BMW X3 or Mercedes-Benz GLC equivalents, though all new XC60s incur a £425 annual VED supplement for five years.
Best for: Buyers seeking a luxurious, comfortable family SUV with Scandinavian design appeal, those prioritising refinement and long-distance comfort, and families wanting efficient hybrid technology.
Not ideal for: Those needing seven-seat capacity, drivers seeking sporty handling characteristics, or buyers on a tight budget seeking value-for-money premium SUVs.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo XC60 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 31.7% | 4.5/5 |
| BMW X3 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 32.8% | 4.5/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLC | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 34.6% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi Q5 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 33.5% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the XC60 if: You seek a luxurious, comfortable family SUV with distinctive Scandinavian design, prioritise refinement and long-distance comfort, or want efficient hybrid technology.
Consider alternatives if: You need seven-seat capacity, desire sporty handling characteristics, or require better value-for-money in the premium SUV segment.
Competitive Position: The Volvo XC60 is a strong contender in the premium mid-size SUV market, offering a refreshingly different approach to luxury with its understated Scandinavian design and exceptional ride comfort. Whilst the BMW X3 edges ahead on expert rating and the Mercedes-Benz GLC leads on user satisfaction, the XC60 holds its own with competitive overall ratings and good-deal availability. It may not match the BMW's sportiness or offer the seven-seat flexibility of some rivals, but its combination of refined comfort, efficient engines and distinctive interior design makes it an excellent choice for buyers prioritising cosseting refinement and long-distance capability over outright performance.
