Quick Summary
The Volvo XC60 is a premium mid-size SUV that has established itself as one of the world's best-selling models. The second-generation XC60, on sale since 2017 with a comprehensive 2025 update, showcases Volvo's transformation from an estate car specialist to a premium SUV-led brand. The updated model features a new 11.2-inch touchscreen with faster software, improved sound insulation, and refined styling. Inside, the minimalist Scandinavian cabin prioritises high-quality materials over flashy design, with soft-touch surfaces and real metal trim creating an air of understated luxury that rivals the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Lexus NX, and Mercedes-Benz GLC.
The XC60 excels in ride comfort and long-distance refinement, with suspension tuned for smoothness rather than sportiness. The simplified engine line-up now comprises a 2.0-litre petrol B5 mild-hybrid (247bhp), T6 plug-in hybrid (346bhp), and range-topping T8 plug-in hybrid (451bhp). Practicality is strong with 483 litres of boot space, expanding to 1,410 litres with seats folded. Running costs are reasonable for the class, with the B5 achieving around 35mpg in real-world driving, whilst plug-in hybrids offer up to 50 miles of electric range. Servicing costs are competitive with the Audi Q5 and lower than BMW and Mercedes equivalents.
Best for: Buyers seeking a luxurious, comfortable, and refined family SUV with Scandinavian design appeal, those prioritising long-distance comfort and low running costs, and families needing practical five-seat accommodation.
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting a sporty SUV with engaging handling, those requiring seven-seat flexibility, or budget-conscious buyers seeking value over premium positioning.

The Verdict
You should buy the XC60 if: You seek a luxurious, comfortable, and refined family SUV with distinctive Scandinavian design, prioritise long-distance comfort and low running costs, or value understated premium appeal over sporty dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You want a more engaging driving experience, require seven-seat flexibility, or prioritise value over premium positioning and brand prestige.
Competitive Position: The Volvo XC60 is a strong contender in the premium mid-size SUV segment, offering a winning blend of luxury, comfort, and practicality. Whilst the BMW X3 edges ahead on driving dynamics and the Mercedes-Benz GLC impresses with user satisfaction, the XC60 distinguishes itself through its refined Scandinavian interior design and exceptional ride comfort. It matches the Audi Q5 for overall appeal whilst offering superior long-distance refinement. The XC60 is ideal for buyers who value cosseting comfort and understated elegance over sportiness, making it a particularly compelling choice for families and those who spend considerable time on motorways.

The Volvo XC60 has garnered a strong reputation across its model years for its quality build, comfort, and performance. Many owners appreciate its generous interior space and safety features, often comparing it favorably against competitors like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Drivers particularly enjoy the economical fuel efficiency and well-equipped interiors, although some do express concerns about the high maintenance costs and the vehicle’s price relative to others in its class. Overall, the XC60 is seen as a stylish and practical choice for those seeking a luxury SUV experience.

What people say
Great car , good price , just not big enough to tow my caravan
All the features you could want in a car, fits very nicely between the 40 and 90 which I find too big
It's a good workhorse and a good luxury car that is brilliant for a family. The AWD was important to get around in bad weather
The XC60 is a wonderful car for touring and the longer distances. The seats are very comfortable and you get a god all round view of other road users. The 2.4 engine is flexible and will give around 40-45 MPG; the 2.0 litre is much more economical and has a lower road tax.
Most other cars will be lucky to make it to 150000 miles. The Volvo is DESIGNED. to do 300 thousand. Keep it serviced and you will never need any other car.
