Customers say
The Volvo XC90 is widely appreciated for its impressive safety features, spacious interior, and reliability, making it a popular family choice. Many owners highlight the comfortable ride and value for money, especially in adverse weather. However, some drivers note that the fuel economy is not as competitive as that of newer SUVs, and certain elements, such as the instrumentation, feel dated in earlier models.

Bought an old 2005 XC90 to get back and forward to work in the rainy snowy winter in Scotland. (I have an Insignia Estate as my normal drive but was struggling in the winter weather). What a difference, great car comfortable safe and mpg not to bad averaging 37 to 38mpg. Insignia did 46mpg average. Cant see me using the Insignia even in summer, so will be selling the new car and keeping an old one 15 years older. All I can say is what a great car, in immaculate condition, full service history, very clean MOT history no advisories on last 5 MOTs. Fine a good one they are out there.

Volvo XC90 (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Tastefully designed interior | Slightly noisy engines |
| Hugely comfortable over long distances | Infotainment system not the best |
| Practical, spacious and safe | No head-up display on all but top-spec Ultra model |
Quick Summary
The Volvo XC90 (2015-present) is a luxurious, seven-seat premium SUV that combines Scandinavian design elegance with exceptional practicality. Built on Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, it features a refined interior with tasteful materials and a user-friendly infotainment system. The three-row seating arrangement offers genuine space for seven occupants, with flexible middle-row seats and a cavernous boot capacity of up to 1,950 litres when all seats are folded. Recent updates in 2024 and 2025 keep the XC90 competitive, though it remains fundamentally a decade-old design compared to newer rivals.
The XC90 is available with two petrol powertrains: the B5 mild-hybrid (246bhp, 7.7 seconds to 62mph) and the T8 plug-in hybrid (306bhp plus 143bhp electric motor, 5.4 seconds to 62mph). The T8 offers an impressive 44.1-mile electric range and claimed fuel economy of up to 235mpg, making it the more economical choice. Both versions feature all-wheel drive, eight-speed automatic transmission, and optional air suspension that enhances comfort and practicality. Running costs are reasonable for a car of this size, with servicing from approximately £369. The XC90 excels as a comfortable, relaxing long-distance cruiser with premium quality throughout, though it's not as dynamically engaging as some German rivals.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, comfortable, and safe seven-seat premium SUV; those prioritising long-distance comfort and Scandinavian design; buyers interested in plug-in hybrid efficiency (T8).
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting the latest platform technology; those seeking sharp, engaging handling; buyers on a tight budget or concerned about engine noise levels.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo XC90 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.2% | 4.4/5 |
| BMW X5 | 5/5 | 4.3/5 | 33.1% | 4.5/5 |

| Mercedes-Benz GLE | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 32.9% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the XC90 if: You're seeking a spacious, comfortable, and safe seven-seat premium SUV; you prioritise long-distance comfort and Scandinavian design; or you're interested in plug-in hybrid efficiency.
Consider alternatives if: You want the latest platform technology, sharp handling dynamics, or are concerned about engine noise and infotainment system quality.
Competitive Position: The Volvo XC90 remains a compelling choice in the premium seven-seat SUV segment, offering exceptional comfort, practicality, and Scandinavian design elegance. Whilst the BMW X5 and Audi Q7 feature newer platforms and slightly higher expert ratings, the XC90 matches or exceeds them in user satisfaction and value proposition. The T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain is particularly attractive for those seeking efficiency without sacrificing performance. However, if cutting-edge technology and the latest design language are priorities, the German rivals may prove more appealing. The XC90's strength lies in its refined, relaxing driving experience and genuine seven-seat practicality—making it ideal for families valuing comfort and quality over sportiness.
